Is a visa extension extended from the date of issue or last day of orignal visa?

I've done many searches to find this rather simple information, and I know it's somewhere on this site already, but I just can't find it.

If I go to the immigration office a week before my 60-day tourist visa expires and get a 30-day extension, will the extension end 30 days from the date I go? Or 30 days from the original end date?

Specifics:

Visa expires Dec 27th.

I want to go to the office on Dec 20th so I can travel elsewhere.

Will my next visa-expire date be ~Jan 19th? Or ~Jan 26th?

(Bonus: If not, and I go to Nan, is it a problem to get the extension in Nan instead? I live in Chiang Mai, but as a "tourist" that shouldn't matter I assume.)

Thank you

You're not extending the visa. You're extending your permission to stay in Thailand. The 30 days is added to the end of the 60 day permission to stay you were given by immigrations when you entered ... not to the expiry date on the actual visa issued by an embassy or consulate.

You lose nothing by applying a week or so before your 60 day permission ends.

If there's a change in the reason for extension of stay, it'll be from the day of the change of reason. (At least, that was my experience, changing from Investment to Retirement.)

That is because the existing extension is cancelled on that date in order for you to apply for the new extension.

And as this is on topic, may I jump on this thread and ask a related question:

Can one do the extension of permission to stay at ANY Immigration Office?

Example: I shall be staying in Pattaya so plan to use the Jomtien office.

But at some stage in my trip I might go to Phuket, or Loei to visit friends.

If it becomes convenient can I just go into any IO with Passport, pictures, paperwork, 1900 Baht and request extension?

And finally, what is the "TM" form that I need to fill in? Can I download it and have it ready to hand over?

Thanks all.....

  • You need to apply at the office that cover the address you put on the application form.
  • If you are extending a tourist visa you can just use the hotel or address your staying at at the time you apply. Proof might be needed.
  • TM7. Yes.

Thanks very much elviajero

The link you posted resolved to a TM 47 (form for staying longer than 90 days)

Now you've told me that I need a TM 7 (APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TEMPORARY STAY IN THE KINGDOM),

may I assume the one on here http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/base.php?page=download is correct even though it's dated 2004!?

Didn't happen to me when Korat was my designated office. I changed from retirement to marriage and the date of expiry of my retirement extension was the date that my marriage extension commenced. However, when Buriram residents were re-designated to Kap Choeng, I lost 28 days when I changed from marriage back to retirement and then I lost time again when I changed from retirement back to marriage....
