I have a question about this place as a Pattaya/Bkk guy it seemed strange.  So, at 730 am on Friday, I hear some Thai music then some Thai dude on a loud speaker not mobile but from a speaker on an electric pole.  I was already up but <deleted>?  My GF tells me the guy is talking about free dog vaccines. Great, thank you.

As I drove more in the area I saw many of these megaphones/speakers on poles in various places.  Kind of seemed communist but what do I know, maybe good to warn people if there is a problem.  Anyway, just curious any info on this?

It's the local news system, courtesy of the village headman, early morning or early evening.

Maybe it is time for the local headman to get modern and use e-mails or Facebook. Just ask around, or have the GF ask around if others don't also think it is a bit antiquated.  You only need to convince a single phu yai (influential and respected local) to effect change.  Many villages now have a new generation of younger headmen who are favorable to such change.  And most villages now use the loudspeakers far less frequently than in previous years.

As for western food oriented restaurants, there are great spots off the 3009 (Prem Rd) north of town, both Chez Phillipe and the Pansawan, that are as good as STOD.  But like most Thai establishments, if busy the service can be slow. The rural ambiance of Pansawan makes such a wait comfortable and at Chez Phillipe the smiles of the owner and her daughters make the occasional wait worth the time. Just enjoy a bottle of wine.

And bkk6060, check out the 12 Panna market and some of the restaurants nearby, which are just across the bridge on the south side on the Mae Jo connection road (1260).

Yeah, I don't want to say too much about the place.  It's terrible right.  haha.

I am back in Pattaya now.  I guess there was a part of me that thought Mae Rim area may be a little boring.

So, I am curious how some people fill their day.  I did not see a bunch of bars with Falang sitting at 9am like here.  That is a good thing.  But, what do people do in Mae RIm?  What is a normal day for a resident?  thanks

My typical day/week: we have about one rai of gardens which always need something doing to them so between that and house related projects they can easily eat away a third/half of my time - it takes me three hours to cut the grass for goodness sake which is great exercise. Lunch in Mae Rim, often on the edge of Chiang Mai, sometimes in Chiang Mai which is only 20 minutes away - grocery shopping a couple of times a week, twice a week I go up into the mountains in the Mae Sa valley where friends live - shopping malls around once a week, get together with neighbours a couple of times a week, meet up with other TVF weekly or so, typical admin stuff such as banking/medical etc takes time. Can't remember the last year I went to the bar - movies maybe twice a month, lunch out maybe three four times a week - head out to Mae Tang or Chiang Rai on weekends. Am considering strongly starting at a gym on the outskirts of the city, 2.5K a month well spent I reckon. Not a rivetingly exciting  existence but at 68 years of age it suits my needs perfectly.

My better half works nearby so her time is spent leading tourist groups around her place of work, something she enjoys very much.

Re. hard headed: the powers that be see that vice doesn't form any part of the landscape here, not even a little bit.

Mae Rim is a small semi-rural town, therefore it doesnt have the bright lights of say Chiang Mai.  However you can still have a great time if you know where to go.  Ive never had any problem with authorities here, in fact quite to opposite.

On the non booze days I still manage to find many places open if I need to have a few beers.

Not many checkpoints out here checking riders re helmets or tax disc. Its a very laid back place really.  Very good early morning market and the Tuesday evening market isnt bad either.

Lots of places in the area to visit and some good rides for bikes.  I like the place

OK thanks for you and Kiwi. I would probably find myself doing some of the same things.  I play golf so that can take up several hours at Green Valley.  I went in there and for $100 a month, I can play everyday.  Just pay caddy fee 300b.  Just so you know a course like that would be $150 for one round in the USA.

A bucket of range balls 40 b.  In my country for that 400 to 500b. I am just saying it seems pretty nice and reasonable.

It seems I could fill my time OK.

The Homeowners won the case against Green Valley in Appeals Court last month.  The case is against Green Valley and not the Condo

The decision was that the gate access cutting through the mooban fence into the Green Valley Condo from Green Valley golf course road is illegal and must be closed.  Furthermore the Green Valley road ownership must revert to the Homeowners

went passed  Green Valley Condo yesterday, and noticed the small boom gate is still in operation, and has not been closed,  and a perimeter wall, put back into place

have heard around the traps, that there still a lot of miles left , before  it will be  closed  , and if ever

a  nice  Beautiful Maerimite  Morning to  all

they have certainly pulled the trigger

a complete new kitchen, , up market new furniture , to be air condition, and plus  plus

Thai  tucker is the fare of the day, opening date is sometime away, at a punt next month (July) would be a good bet

perhaps another good nose bag for all Beautiful Maerimites

its a Wayne Fontana  good morning to alll

I thought I saw some work beginning a few weeks back on the Ploerim condos up near the waterworks (Just before 4 seasons) A lot of migrant workers on scooters, but then maybe they were just employed for a few days to cut all the weeds down? Glad I didnt get burnt in that shamozzle. I had heard a foreign investor was trying to get it up and running again, good luck with that.

Still unsure whats happening with the corner section near the lights that head to Tiger Kingdom. All rip shit and bust for a few weeks and now nothing, seems to be a common trait around these parts.

There was word last week that all booze sales were to cease within Mae Rim plaza with effect 1 Jan 2016. Since then the local police boss has said, only those next to or near schools. Still a bit ambigious. I think the coffee shop next to Steak of the Day would have been a bit worried, as too with Simon who owns the place further down. I was thinking we may all end up sitting out in a paddy field in order to comply with these wonderful demands!

just a  fair dinkum  up date on your 18 month old  Hit  and Miss  post , u seem to like guessing then posting the real deal, when it actually occurs

1/ Ploenrimtai  Condo has workers living and working on site, perhaps around ten at this stage

2/ your corner section  has  a few  steel   building  structures in place,it appears its on the way to be more shops and another petrol station, no Big OR  MINI  C, at this point of time

3/your Maerim Plaza  booze sales comments, never ever got to base one,  what a ridicolous word from you, business as usual

its a South Sydney Rabbitoh good arvo to all

Back to the topic. My experience living in MaeRim has been good except the occasional can't run away fast enough accidental encounter with one of the two pricks I have come across.

Now lets put things in perspective,

my post dated 27 Dec 2016 was based on what was occurring at that time.  It was not hearsay, rumour or Aussie bush talk.  I stand by what I reported on and saw.

I agree the booze free Mae Rim part of it never happened in the end, but at the time that was the word going around  the vendors in the Plaza. I wouldnt have affested Ray and Nui at SOTD as they weren't into the alcohol scene (It either came from the coffe shop next door ot House of  Wine).

Obviously there was a bit of feed back and the local constabulary never enforced this ridiculous law.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.... a bit like owning/buying a condo over near Green Valley.

Its a Lorde evening to all!

And Id hate to guess who they might be....fair dinkum mate!

They say there's always a bad egg in every clutch (amoungst various other sayings)... but sometimes one seems to attract these types. Maybe its the friendly face or the aura one generates that makes one so susceptible to these people.   Regardlessless of which,  it does become somewhat annoying when you cant shake them off with out offending them....(Bit like a dag on a sheeps rearend).

Im sure Mae Rim has its fair share of these people, but perhaps no different than other areas.

Sometimes one 'has to be cruel to be kind'.

Overall Mae Rim is a great place, plenty to do. Lots of places to visit and find.  People from different backgrounds but with good outlooks towards life.... they do exist and become good friends too.  I wouldnt move from here too quickly.....its home.

it will be better soon i hear

the pig farm was unbearable last year

had to change windows to solid glass and air condition on

12yrs ago told everyone they bought land at lampang and were moving

then stayed /and asked local people and govt to give them money

to upgrade there plant to stop the smell

over the years every time health dept said something

the the head of dept was moved to another area

the owner has many farms and factory's in los

and high govt person in bkk? over past yrs

but maybe army man has put pressure on

as word around they are on the move

then again will depend on how much corrupt money comes out

Where abouts is this pig farm? I've never seen it (Nor smelt it).  However I have had the unfortunate luck to get stuck behind one of those food refuse trucks.

The ones that leak fluid over the road, not nice when riding a bike and the smell is over the top too.

For those that live next to this pig farm, I hope your dreams come true and they move.  Especially if you were there first and they suddenly opened up next to you.

I suppose in Thailand you can only do so much due diligence and city planning isn't that reliable  (If it exists at all!)

surely with your  asssumed  Newbie   knowledge ,  how  Maerim  operates etc etc   , this particular  Pig  Business  should be well known to you,as it is only approx4/ 5 ks north ,  of Maerim  Plaza, ( just a clue for a Newbie) do hope this can help

a nice afternoon to all

If its the pig farm I'm thinking of, didn't theym many years ago put a membrane over the shit pond to capture the methane gas produced and use it to run electrical generators? I think the smell pretty much went away after that.

i have no idea how that  pig  business is run etc etc,  but over  12 yrs,   pass by there   ,most days ,   and never smelt any bad odour whats ever, but perhaps my sense of smell  is not as strong as others, or i pass at the wrong time

the business to my knowledge has been there  at least   16 yrs  .and at that time ,the  residential  side  was sparsely populated, now adays there are two large Moobaans with in  couple ks aprox   and     number    of other  residential dwellings very close by, and presently  more are getting built , land owners  are asking  up to 4 mil a rai, in those neck of the woods, ,amother clue for the Newbie  know it all,  its  very close to the Thai Markets ,on the road to Prem International School

its a very nice morning  to all

See, I told all you people Mae Rim sucks and you should all stay away.  We have Aussies who speak cryptically, over priced steak houses, and because Mae Rim is such a geographically small district we must all deal with the wafting stench of pig manure on a daily basis. Yes, Hang Dong should tempt you all with their lush green fields and modern "mubaans".  I mean heck, even I travel down for a burger at Papa Rocks. Head south young and old men, head south.

i think they are talking of moving the pig farm to hang dong /?

I think you are just stirring the pot talking about an imaginary pig farm from the beginning.  If you are talking about a real one, please provide some good location information.  Thanks.
