Can anyone who has had to have a home visit for their visa extension tell me if they had to pay for this visit above the normal visa fee.

I only ask as I am having a home visit soon from immigration for my retirement visa and would like to be prepared.

I wouldn't answer the door. Let them come back again, like we have to, countless times.

I had a home vidit from KCI last week following my application for an extension of stay based on retirement. No "expenses" were asked for.

My previous extension was based on marriage and I got a home visit for that (which is normal practice). Once again, no expenses were asked for.

I live 130Km from Kap Choeng.

There are no official fees for the home visit. Some unscrupulous IO's might try to get "petrol money" from you.

When they spoke to my wife and said they were coming they told her I would have to pay petrol money.

I think you have just got to bite the bullet this time.

When i applied for the retirement extension the IO said it would be a one off visit and future extensions (retirement) would not require a new visit. He said if I changed back to marriage then we would get another visit. But whether this is what happens in reality, well I guess I'll find out next year when I apply for my retirement extension once more.

They have very little power to refuse a legit application.

Quite easy for them to be dismissed if they play games.

If you are refused an extension, you can appeal to a higher authority ..... and the refusers better have an explanation.

When you pay any official in Thailand for something that is not a service that has a fee and a receipt, you are being corrupt and only adding to the biggest problem we have in this country, corruption. I do not contribute and neither should you.

The U.S. Consulate - Chiang Mai will do a "house call" for services, like Income Letter for people who are housebound. There is a fee for this and they provide a receipt. They can provide a document that details the charges for home visits and a receipt.

Why not expect the same of a Thai Immigration official who insists he MUST make a home visit? If this is their "policy" then it should be in writing.

Incidentally, the U.S. Consulate people only make home visits at the invitation of their citizens.

An example from a different govt department.

My wife works for the govt. About 2 weeks every month she's part of a team inspecting private and govt entities in our and neighboring provinces for compliance. Most of the time they travel in department provided vehicles with or without driver.

On the rare occasion when no department transport is available for her official task she drives her car. She's paid a predetermined fuel/travel allowance reflecting the kilometers to be traveled that adequately covers the cost of fuel/vehicle wear and tear.

I have a strong suspicion immigration operates the same way.

I'll let you decide if they're trying to pull a fast one by demanding fuel money.

1000 bahts is cheap compared to hiring an agent and traveling down there to PM and waiting from 5 to 5 and possibly returning the next day for your passport. Does one have to be sick to avail themselves of this service. I can borrow my neighbors wheelchair as well.

I live about 1 hour drive from my Imm office. My first ext for marriage, they substituted the house visit by having me get 2 neighbors to sign a form, I presume saying I did live where I said, with my wife. Copy of each neighbor's Thai ID and a photograph of them signing the form.

The money for petrol sounds a bit dodgy. I go along with Farma's rationale in post #14.

Lap choeng wanted 2000 from me but when I asked for receipt and video it they said they were joking ,I was anxious to go kap choeng 3 weeks later but everything was good ,don't pay them

Cost me a tin of beer, two tins of fizzy, two cigarettes and a nice chat........

If you feel lonely move to Kap Choeng and you will have visitors.

Since a while I read about these home visits even for retirees.

They have too much time and staff!

Thats would be worth reporting.

Fortunately in Khon Kaen they are busy enough.

Government officials are paid expenses for travel within their job role.

Home visits are not a service that you request, they are part of Immigrations policy to do x visits on the status of foreigners.

Once you pay, you'll be ear marked as the 'easy touch' for future 'donations'.

Stand up and question the charge. Thais hate to be confrontational and lose face, especially when they know they are wrong.

If an officer made the same request to my g/f, I'd be straight on the phone to his office and complain.

These visits are made at their discretion, not your request.

try and schedule an appointment with them siting business affairs or some such. Then, pay the small fee to the US Consulate for a home visit at the same time so you have a credible witness.

what a crowd of cheapskates on this forum who have nothing better to do than bash everything in Thailand. These posters have hundreds of thousands of baht their bank accounts, equaling 5 to 10 years pay for the average immigration officer and they begrudge a few Baht. Perhaps I live in a different world from them and have a different backround, but it is always been our custom to give a small tip to tradesmen, police officers, the postman and others like immigration and consequently I've always found them respectful pleasant and helpful.
