NEW COURT
Council approves creation of corruption court

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The government is one step closer to setting up a special court to hear corruption cases in a move to ensure crooked officials, wrongdoing in the business sector and others involved in graft receive swift punishment, Government Spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday.

Sansern said the Council of State had finished its review of the bill to set up the court as had been proposed by the Office of the Court of Justice.

However, the creation of the court requires legislation affecting other relevant laws so it is not yet clear when it will be established.

"This marks the beginning of the process to set up the court so that corruption cases do not face lengthy court procedures. Corrupt people can face the consequences of their offences sooner,'' Sansern said.

According to the bill, the Central Criminal Court's Corruption Case Division would be established with jurisdiction over Bangkok and suburbs and the Regional Criminal Court's Corruption Case Division would have jurisdiction as stipulated in the Royal Decree.

what is it with you people, it seems you just can't help yourselves and live in a tiny space of constant negativity and depression, have you tried seeking medical help, have you ever actually seen even the slightest hint of positivity in anything

".... have you ever actually seen even the slightest hint of positivity in anything"

And exactly what is it that has happened lately that would elicit such a feeling of "positivity"?

- Generals jailed for park scandals.

- Students and other "dissidents" get charges dropped and immediately released.

- Permanent residency via investment of, say $200,000 USD in real estate or business (increases FDI).

- Allow foreigners to own property (increases FDI).

- Quit paying cops rewards for even halfway doing an unfinished job.

- Cops actually doing their jobs.

- Fire 9/10ths of the military's staff officers.

- Firing squad for any and all forms of corruption.

-------------

Any of the above would have me as their biggest cheerleader.

This watered down Corruption Court is just adding yet another layer of bureaucracy to an inept system.

Only two things I am feeling positive about:

#1. The price of lottery tickets has gone down

#2. My GF is going to be complaining again about The General interrupting her lakorn's for his Friday night speech

I have a different take on this announcement.

The stated reason for a new corruption court is to avoid lengthy procedures and speed up the prosecution. Those are laudable goals, but I have two objections:

- if this "speeding up" eliminates protections for defendants (you know, innocent until proven guilty stuff), then justice will not be served and it is more likely the court will be abusive.

- why not look for ways to speed up prosecutions for all offenses instead of segregating the improvements for a specific class of crimes? The wheels of justice in Thailand grind so slowly (especially for the wealthy) that there cannot possibly be any faith in the justice system. Isn't this the BIGGER PROBLEM?

So, corrupt people can face the consequences...sooner.

Won't come soon enough to punish former Democrat, Pracha Phopipit and his wife!

As reported elsewhere, they were supposedly too ill to attend court sessions, yet it seems they have now flown the "coup".

Just another example that political and judicial corruption in Thailand continues with gay abandon.

Such a court Thailand needs desperately, especially with more than 25,000 current corruption cases!

With which procedures the judges may be appointed or dismissed?

Are there any judges who are so independent, honest and still powerful?
Especially when you consider that many corruption cases relating to high-ranking people, like from politics, administration, ministries, police, army and other organizations.

Overall a dangerous job, when one thinks of the chief investigator General who made too much trouble for the Human traffickers. He had to fear for his life and fled to Australia to seek asylum there.

Was there to be a special court for the Human Trafficking cases, what happened to that?

OK I just figured.

Simple the guy who had the evidence and did the investigation is now drinking caffe lattes and watching Home and Away in Melbourne, when not looking over his shoulder.
