From where is visa run still possible now ?

Featured Replies

We made a tourist visa for 2 months in Penang in Malaysia. We are a french couple. Our visa will expire on the 1st of february 2016. But we would like to stay 1 more month. We know that it is possible to go to an immigration office in Thailand, pay 1900 bahts, et get a 1 month extension. But this is really expensive.

We would like to know if we can make a visa run from Mae Sai, Mae Sot or somewhere else in the north because we are in Mae Hong Son.

I have read that it is not possible anymore in Mae Sai. But I have a friend who got a 30 days extension in november 2015... Strange...

What about Chiang Khong ? Do we have to pay for the Lao Visa (30 dollars) ? How long should we stay in Laos at least ? Thank you for your help. We want to work as volonteers in Mae Hong Son, that's why we would like to stay longer.

u want to work on a tourist visa???

Laos visa is $25-40 depending on ur rationality, not sure what French pay, American's pay $35 US and yes u would need to pay for one.

if 1,900 is to much for u,i feel sad for you.

Lao Visa plus travel expenses will be more than $1900 baht I think.

There have been many reports of Mae Sai not allowing out/in crossings for a visa exempt entry. Before they stopped dong them entirely that were turning people away that were eligible for a 30 day extension.

Mae Sot has not been allowing them for a long time now.

It will cost you $30 or 1500 baht for the Lao visa on arrival if you go to Chiang Khong. You could cross turnaround and re-enter the country. If you don't have the $30 already it would cost you about 1100 baht to get it. Not sure you could make the trip to Chiang Khong and back for less 800 baht that you would save verses the extension at 1900 baht.

As said, you are working illegally and risk fines, prison, deportation.

Get the correct Visa and Work Permit.

If you chose the illegal route then an extension at Immigration would probably save you money.

Maybe he doesn't understand that volunteer work is considered working in Thailand

If getting Lao via on arrival after normal working hours or weekends there is a $1 overtime fee charged.

"rip off the white guy with blue eyes? I guess."

Paying for things must be an alien concept to those who come from Nanny States.

Working of any sort in Thailand is not permitted with just a tourist visa. If you want to work for some volunteer organization in Thailand you should check with them about visa & work permit requirements.

It is because people like you are working illegally - and as stated above, volunteering is considered work - that successive Thai governments have progressively tightened up on arrangements for tourists and made it very difficult for them to stay for long holidays. If you wish to volunteer, please apply for the correct visa. If they wont give you one, try another country, there are places with much greater need than Thailand.

Yes, one must obtain a work permit to work even as a volunteer. But, no, volunteers and English teachers are not the reason for the "tightening up" that is forcing out foreigners who were/are living here spending foreign capital into the local economy. I'd explain why, but it seems discussing the real reasons is not permitted. In any case, yes, request that your organization provide you with the paperwork to get the proper visa. Offer to pay for the cost of an attorney, to prepare the paperwork for them.

Are you sure you are not being overly cryptic here. You suggest that my reason is incorrect but it sounds like you are getting at the usual anti-foreigner conspirators in the ruling elite theory, without actually saying so.
