New Year road toll rises to 340 on sixth day

BANGKOK: -- The death toll from road accidents rose to 340 at the end of the sixth day of the road-accident monitoring period on Sunday.

The Road Safety Centre announced on Monday that 339 road accidents happened on Sunday, killing 48 people and injuring 361 others.

The accumulated number of injuries during the first six days of the so-called seven dangerous New Year holidays stood at 3,216. A total of 3,092 accidents happened during the period.

Only in Thailand a fiasco like this campaign will be declared a "success".

According to the stats there were 26.312 casualties in 2010.

So on average 72 a day. Everyday.

Therefore in 6 days there are 432 casualties in Thailand.

So it's much less than usual. It's all the other days that matters. Usually during new year and songkran less people die.

Over a 5 day period during Christmas and New Year in the UK, only 20 people were reported to have been killed on the roads.

The UK has a population level almost equal to Thailand, which is around 72 Million.
