Hi,

I have family over that love train travel and they are currently staying in Korat City.

They would like to take the train into Bangkok but are worried whether or not their luggage will be secure, Ideally they would like to keep sight of it as there are many stops where someone could have it away.

2 relatively large suitcases..

Anyone with any advice or tips? It would be very much appreciated..

Over the years I've traveled on Thai 2nd class sleeper from Bankok to Udon Thani and Nong Khai many times and never had a problem or heard of anybody else having luggage/bags tampered with or stolen.

If it would make you feel happier/safer, sleep with your head at the same end of the bunk as your luggage/bags and/or secure your luggage/bags with a thin chain or bike lock to the rack.

as Lozth mentioned , have the bags within eyesight of where they are sitting. No one will touch them if they are near you. Also put a small lock on any that have valuables inside.

Use common sense. Keep cash and other high value items (passport, jewelry etc.) on your person. Do not display high-value items, or count your money in front of fellow passengers who likely earn only a few thousand baht per month.

Take the first class cabin, someone would have to come into your cabin to steal anything--if there are several of you, take two adjoining cabins and open the door between them.

There is also the fact that first class cabins have doors that have a latch lock from the inside that can't be opened from outside.
