BANGKOK: -- After the shocking and sad news yesterday that legendary rocker David Bowie passed away on Sunday, media outlets all over the world rushed to pay tribute to the Man Who Fell To Earth.

That included Thai newspaper Thairath, who praised the British star as "the singer of the well-known hit 'It's My Life' which is familiar among Thais."

Um. Turns out the outlet had confused Bowie with US rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who is very much still alive and well.

only the Thai's could <deleted> it up ... gigglem.gif

You mean like various western media who get Thailand and Taiwan confused? Faraway places with same-sounding names confuse reporters and editors alike ... we're all the same to them.

You didn't name those two newspapers but the first one (judging from the names of the reporters) may not be "western".

The second appears to be Canadian (Vancouver address on one of the ads), so I'll concede that one.

But I will agree - not only the Thais get things wrong.

They only got the headline wrong. A military coup in Thailand is irrelevant, as it seems to occur 2 or 3 times a decade, the passing of Bowie IS important. Stop defending them.

You're right. Not only Thais get things wrong, but they are the best at it. Gold medal cock-up merchants.

Could be worse. One Western source said David Cameron had died and the entire British nation nearly went into months of national mourning.

As far as I know, California is in the west. You do realize that not all westerners are named Smith and Jones?? Gee, thanks for "conceding" that Canada is in the west.

The San Jose Mercury News, one of the most important newspapers in California, was left with egg on its face after it printed a headline declaring that the Bangkok bombing happened in Taiwan.

You stated that various western media get Thailand and Taiwan confused (I agree).

You posted two newspaper headlines to illustrate your assertion, but you did not name either of the newspapers or give a link to them.

With no name and no link, how did you expect us to know that these were Californian and Canadian newspapers? English language newspapers are produced all over the world, not just in the west.

The two reporters in the first image have typically Thai names (in fact they are Thai, not western).

I suggested the possibility that the newspaper "may not be western".

You responded with unnecessary sarcasm (and a belated link). Just the link would have been enough.
