Wind your necks in, chaps.

That squiggle at the end of my post is a question mark. I was asking if it's considered a racist term.

Although by the defensive replies I received, I'm guessing it probably is.

not racist at all, just the way aussies talk, shortening of words is very common in the aussie language, lebo - lebenese, itie - italian, aussie - australian, footy - football(real racist hey), frangi - frangipani, barbie - barbeque etc etc. Admittedly the way it is said can infer racism but in the greater majority of cases it is not meant in any derogatory way at all, using slang is just common in every country. I still use aussie slang ocassionally, noah - shark(noahs ark), china - mate(china plate), frog & toad - road, just a matter of prospective and probably which era you grew up in.
Yeah but it ain't the era you grew up in mate and in todays world any words based on race with derogatory connotations is racist. And it ain't any good decrying those peoples views, if its perceived Its there and therefore racist. The quicker people on this forum got to grips with that the better

You are probably right that race with derogatory connotations is racist. So get educated and understand that nationality is not race. Use the word racism when dealing with race not nationality.Racism is called much to often in the wrong context, people who do it should think before they speak.

You think "Lebo" is odd?

Wait till you come across "Drongo" or "Banana Bender"

Oz has the best new word inventors.

You betcha, top-quality finest word inventors, exported from the United Kingdom, or Pommie-Land as it ought to be known ! laugh.png

They all add colour & life, to an otherwise-boring world, innit ?

Strewth, they're dinkie-die heroes !rolleyes.gif

it was the era I grew up in, you wouldnt know me from a bar of soap, "strine" was everywhere growing up plus well used in the armed forces when I was in there, seems the one with the problem here is you, maybe you need to take a bex and have a good lie down........there is a big difference in friendly banter and racism except for those with a biased view on everything and everybody.

Theres xenofobia in Thailand but it's a small minority or retards who have no life and no brains. On the other side I know several Thais who look down on their own culture and prefer going along with westerners. Theres many fake smiles and many genuine smiles. You have nice foreigners and idiots. (and a few concentrations of idiotic farangs and fake smiles) Could not care less, life is what you make of it. In 2 decades in Thailand I met only one clearly racist local, a used car dealer near who refuses to sell to foreigners. Could not care less. Avoided being robbed twice, both in my own EU country.

. That people find it derisory should be enuf for people to respect and realise its perceived connotations but I suppose stupid is stupid as ignorance is ignorance as racist is racist.!!

Just how bold are young Thai males when the cops actually get involved? I don't imagine the "more front than Harrods" attitude would last for two seconds when all of the possibilities of an authoritarian state hove into view.

Why not the most likely explanation? The kid did not see you. Thailand is a country where people are too busy with their mobile phones. Whether they are driving or walking, they are focused on the device. It's why so many people drive out of their lane or walk into things. coffee1.gif

The other possible explanation is that someone was hitting on you because you were such a hansum man. I read in TVF that some farangs are so hansum, the Thais will do anything to get the farang's attention. wub.png

Who finds it derisory?

I haven't seen any Lebanese Australians comment or take offence

Having Lebanese Australian friends myself and having grown up with some, i know they often refer to themselves in the same slang

Black people sometimes use the 'N' word. That doesn't mean it's ok for the rest of us to use.

Totally different situation

The N word has a long and distasteful history and was used for any person of color, despite what nation they came from

I'm not convinced that it's okay when they use it.

Perhaps not.

Any word can be used to convey disdain, bigotry, racism.

Likewise the same word can be used without malice, in ignorance of the effect it might have

I've heard the word 'Aussie' spoken in equal measures of pride and derision, from different ethnic groups
