We don't know for sure whether they're scammers. All we've got is hearsay from cops. How trustworthy or honest is a Thai cop? If you've been reading the Ko Tao threads, you'd probably give them a low grade. If the Aussies are scammers, then deal with it on a commensurate level. They way you guys talk here online, it sounds like you'd frog march them to the town square and stone them to death.

BTW, I meet Aussies up here in northern CA. All have been fine. Same for Russkies. I think the main reason there are disparaging things written about some nationalities is the people writing those remarks are making their observations in Phuket and Pattaya. That's the key, right there. The type of folks who get attracted to those places (the observers and the observed) are in those hyper-touristy unfriendly places, so they attract each other. If you go looking for fish in a muddy water hole, you're going to find mud-loving creatures. On the other hand, if you go looking for fish in a clear mountain stream, you'll find a different sort.
