Serious problem that needs addressed in Pattaya

Right so drunk driving has been in the news quite a lot recently but it doesn't really affect me as I use the City transport services when I go out socialising

So that is all well and good, I go out have a drink and rely on someone else to drive me home -

Well a few nights ago I was on 2nd road (not going to mention where as it doesn't matter) looking for a MB taxi to drive me home and every one of them that I approached was very obviously intoxicated, what is the point in me going out not drinking and driving when the people that are going to provide me with a taxi home are drunker than me ????

Pattaya City/police need to start doing random breath tests at taxi ranks on those that are making themselves availble to customers, it is rediculous that these people are still trying to pick up customers who are abiding the law and not drinkng and driving when they are very obviously out of their heads on drink drugs or both

I have to stress that not all MB taxi drivers are drinking on the job, I know quite a few that are beyond reproach and very reliable, this particular experience happen North of Pattaya Klang on 2nd road and it wasn't just 1 or 2 of them it was every one of them that I came across stretching from soi 2 to soi 6, I walked that far that I ended up just walking home, this was around 1am. Pattaya is dangerous on the roads in the early hours as there are so many drunks driving cars, I am not willing to let a drunk MB taxi driver drive me home any time never mind the time of day.

As you should.

Thing I like about Thailand is that you are responsible for yourself, not the nanny state.

The problem is if you pay for more police to do a job of Policing traffic in the evening you need money to do so and the only way to get that money is from additional tax. I don't think we want that so Police yourself.......I always ask every Tax driver if he has been drinking and i also get close enough see if i can smell alcohol before getting ion board. I fi keep my self safe my chances are better

Living here is all about minimizing risk - day in day out, or should I say night in night out.

I've no smart answer for the OP. The only solutions seem to be;

Drink somewhere near home where you can walk back. (Might be boring)

Drive a m'bike yourself, but don't drink! (Still a dangerous option)

Drink at home. (Certainly boring)

A real catch 22 I know and not very helpful.

Funnily enough, I used to enjoy a drink when I was married to a Thai lady who didn't drink, who used to do the driving. When we got divorced I packed in drinking. Haven't missed it one bit.

A policeman doesnt have to issue many tickets to cover his own salary.

Well for years, the police stop work at 6pm and all the Taxi drivers know it, so they start drinking, nothing new here been going for years.

There are many checkpoints at night. The problem is that the taxi drivers know where they are and are not usually stopped anyway.

I have had similar problems as the op and try and get to taxi stands i know that are more reliable.

"the police stop work at 6pm" perhaps correction? Go off duty? punch out time card? But "work".... ummm

One radical solution would be to find something else to do at night other than getting smashed and thus one won't need to find a sober taxi driver in the wee hours to babysit you. Or, if needs must, drink closer to home so that you can stagger home unaided. Or even venture out in a group with someone designated to remain conscious for the night.

As I say, radical ... probably bordering on the treasonous.

You live in "Pattaya" end of story.

Why you stay in such a city ??

Do you have any worse city in Th than pattaya ??

its your fault !!

leave - run - as long as you still able to run !!

Ah, more expert opinions on Pattaya from people who would never come here ... and have a catalog of sordid personal experiences to prove it.

To avoid the risks of MB taxi early death i don't use them anymore, I've chosen a place to stay which is central so walking and baht bus is fine for me. I wasn't overly worried about the MB taxi drinking it was the fact the helmets never fit me and so many people drink drive at night.

....your serious problem is.....'their way of life'.....

...many a Thai have told me....'This is my country, not yours'.......

...so besides the obvious moral and legal or criminal implications.....do not expect a change to be effected for you....

...and 'find a way around it'.....

With the same idea I went to get a taxi at Rhompo in Jomtien last week and the only taxi guy there was clearly on something ( I noticed as we were setting off) but it was late, and the cops never stop these guys anyway. About time they started.

I agree with the OP but it is not that difficult to get close to them and smell their breathe.

My experience is 1 or 2 out of 10 have been drinking.

If they have, just move on.

PS: Maybe 5 of 10 falang (conservative) on motorbikes have been drinking in the evening and night.

So where is the real problem?
