At least 650 garment workers from H.R Grand Garment factory in the Kean Svay district in Kandal province went on strike after their union representative was fired due to a dispute with a Chinese language interpreter.

“Yern Sophindara, 37, a president of the Khmer Union Federation of Workers Spirit in the factory, was fired because she caused conflict with the Chinese language interpreter for the factory. She was angry that the interpreter did not help her to translate and the Chinese manager blamed her,” said Nov Lang, Kean Svay District Deputy Police Chief.

According to Mr. Lang, some workers did not want to go on strike and were prevented from working by Ms. Sophindara. The fired union representative may return to work, but is now demanding higher wages.
