Cabinet approves rubber purchase plan, effective on Jan 25

BANGKOK, 20 January 2016 (NNT) – The Cabinet has given the green light to the plan under which 100,000 tons of rubber will be bought at 45 baht per kilogram from January 25 onwards.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya revealed that the Cabinet has agreed to his ministry’s proposal to purchase up to 100,000 tons of rubber directly from farmers under a total budget of 4.5 billion baht, or at a price of 45 baht a kilogram. Starting on January 25, the Rubber Authority of Thailand, on behalf of the government, will begin accepting all types of rubber from planters across the country.

In the meantime, the Bureau of the Budget, the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Council of State have been assigned to determine where the 4.5-billion-baht budget should be allocated from.

On the other hand, Mr Opat Klunbutr, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, voiced concerns over the execution of the newly-approved rubber purchase plan. He claimed the current rubber subsidy scheme, which entitles rubber farmers to 1,500 baht per rai, is still faced with problems, particularly in the disbursement process.

No, you won't because before the military loosens it's stranglehold on this country they will write and pass a law giving themselves amnesty for whatever they have done or will do while they provided Thailand with Peace and Order

As always subsidies do not solve the problem and the government just wants to be seen to be popular. This government is firmly stuck in the past and does not understand that farmers need help to modernize to become more efficient or diversify.

So we have had rice subsidies, after rubber, what’s next palm oil; cassava…?

Well at least 99% of Thai farmers are happy.

"the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Council of State have been assigned to determine where the 4.5-billion-baht budget should be allocated from"

Perhaps reduce the defense budget from its approved 7% increase for 2016 to previous year 5% increase and eliminate the 5% civil service pay raise for 2016 that was preceded by 5% pay raises in 2014 and 2015. And though its might only be symbolic, eliminate the double salaries paid to active military officers serving in the NCPO, cabinet, NLA, CDC, NRSC, etc.

My how I would love to hear Englishjohn's explanation has to how this differs to the Queen of Isaan's rice buying scheme, in terms of which group of farmers supported who, and also from an economical perspective.
