my benny rai Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Just called the Dept of Land Transportation's Head Office in Bangkok and they stated that they no longer accept a letter from Immigration when applying for or renewing a Thai driver's license. But please note you do not need such a letter that is very costly from your embassy if you have a valid work permit. So, to get your new 5 year Thai license, you also need to have 2 1" photos, a copy of your passport, and your old, expired Thai license. Perhaps others will have different expriences but this was what I was told from two different officers I talked to. Also, one has 1 full year to apply to extend your first 1 year license.

Cigarette Burn Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 What documentation do you need to take to embassy to obtain letter confirming proof of address? Good question, one which i have been unable to find the answer to on the forum.
my benny rai Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 Please call your embassy. Mine said just bring my passport and money. They will watch me swear that I live where I live and then they will give me a letter.
OneeyedJohn Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Presumably this change is because of the increased demand for these letters. Our local Imm Dept ( Maesai ) did mention last month when I got 2 letters ( m/c / car ) how this process had increased dramatically from 2/3 per month to over 30. Had I gone to get these letters from embassy would they have charged 1500 per letter I wonder. At one stage in my previous visa apps , Imm requested a letter from the embassy to verify that my wife was who she said she was despite having several documents ( passport, uk nationalisation , birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce certificate ) that clearly stated her name. How ludicrous can things get.......................how ludicrous do u want them
Totster Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 The British Embassy require you to fill out two forms, one to register with them, and the other to apply for the letter. Give them both forms with your passport and fee and you can pick up the letter the next day. Alternatively they can send the letter by EMS for an extra bt40. This was handy for two reasons, first reason is that I didn't have to go to the embassy again (I applied on Friday, so would have had to wait over the weekend), and secondly, they didn't keep my passport, they just made a copy. Remember, this information applies to the British Embassy, as "my benny rai" said, please check with you embassy for their requirements. totster
LaReina Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I just had my Dl renewed last week. I was turned away from TWO offices (onut and JJ Market area) for not having a letter from my Embassy. So, unless you know some people in the office, I don't think you can get by without that letter. If you have a workpermit, then you have to take copies AND the original WP with you.
