My husband has a Non Immigrant ‘O’ visa because he is taking care of our son. Our son has a Non Immigrant ‘ED’ visa.
Both of
their visas are valid until November. I have an ‘ED’ visa because I am studying Thai language. My last 90 day extension
will expire in October.

My husband will be 50 in March this year. In October, he would like to change to Retirement visa and I would like to
apply for a visa as his dependent.
We understand that he doesn’t need to leave the country to change his visa type but he does need to have 800,000
baht in a Thai bank account for 90 days before he applies. We understand that I must leave the country to apply to
change my visa but I don’t need to have any money in a Thai bank account.

Is this information correct?

Also, can the 800,000 baht for my husband be made up of a smaller amount in the Thai bank account (e.g 400,000 baht)
and the remainder shown as a regular monthly income (e.g. from an investment property) that is deposited into our bank
account in our home country? Or is this option only available to people who have actually reached the ‘official retirement
age’ of their home country (e.g. 65 years old) and receiving a Retirement Pension from their home country?

There is no "retirement" visa !

Your husband could apply for an extension of stay based on retirement.

He would need 800,000 Bht in a Thai bank, OR a certified monthly income of 65k Bht OR a combination of cashin the bank + cert. income totaling 800k Bht.

Your husband can change the reason for is extension of stay (not a visa) to retirement but can only do it when his current extension ends.

He could use the combination of money in the bank and income proven by a income letter from his embassy totaling 800k baht.

You may also be able to change the reason for your extensions also from education to being his dependent. You should check with your local immigration office to see if they will do it. There is no requirement for you to have a non-o visa entry to apply for the extension.

He can use the 400,000 in his bank. Letter from bank needed as proof.

Depending on where he applies the money needs to be in the bank for 2 months or one day only.

He can top up with the monthly income.

Letter from his Embassy needed as proof.

Hi Eclipse

Any idea whether the proof from the Embassy can be obtained by email or post? Or does my husband have to attend the Embassy in person?

It seem you are from Australia. Your husband would have do a statutory declaration to prove his income in person at the embassy in Bangkok.

Can you please confirm that I definitely don't need any money in a Thai bank account in order to change my visa from education to being my husband's dependent?

You do not need to show any financial proof to apply for a dependent extension of stay.

A bit confusing at first, but you will find your methods and strategies...what about the 400 K and you own a house, does that count as well?... that is the yellow book of Thai home ownership by a non-Thai.

Only money in the bank and/or proof of income can be used to get an extension of stay based upon retirement.
