BANGKOK: -- Thailand has been voted the 21st best country in the world in the "Best Countries" list unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Wednesday.

A survey of 16,000 people worldwide placed Thailand in the 21st place out of 60 selected countries in the rankings conducted by U.S. News & World Report, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and global brand consultants BAV Consulting.

The respondents, 8,000 of which were classified as “elites” and 4,500 as “business decision-makers,” were asked to share their perceptions on a random selection of 65 country attributes.

The attributes were then grouped into nine sub-rankings: adventure, citizenship, cultural influence, entrepreneurship, heritage, movers, open for business, power and quality of life.

Selective poll , not worth the time to write this BS

All polls are BS.

However 4.1 out of 10 is feeble. Got to wonder how much the others below scored.

No mention of road deaths, prostitution or military coups, that would move them up right to the top of the list clap2.gif

Open for business #10.......but farang are not allowed to work here.

Open for business #10.......but farang are not allowed to work here.

The Thai opens the business. The farang pays for the business.

Interestingly they scored very low on citizenship

Near impossible to gain Thai citizenship... And a PR still needs a work permit.

Saudi Arabia is #29. This is a great poll.

I took it that the survey was from the perspective of the citizens of a country, not from expats hoping to live and work there. Can't see the methodology used though.

According to the survey website it says that Citizenship (17 percent weight in overall score) means a country that:

cares about human rights, cares about the environment, gender equality, progressive, religious freedom, respects property rights, trustworthy and well-distributed political power.

....Thailand scored overall 0.3 out of 10 in this category

Quote from the article full story. The survey scored the citizenship area correctly.

However, Thailand's score for "citizenship," which explores the country's interest in issues such as human rights, environment, gender equality, and as well as its trustworthy quality, was among the lowest in the world's chart.

Saudi Arabia is #29. This is a great poll.

Well spotted. What a <deleted> joke!!

There are a number of things about this survey that are noteworthy (let's call them "grains of salt").

1. The people surveyed do not represent a cross section; only the elite were included. This means TVF members were certainly not part of the respondents. smile.png

2. This is a perception survey; it is not based on any objective measurements

3. The selection of countries (only 60) was based on information from 2012-2013; this would tend to favor Thailand (who might have been excluded under current conditions). Three of Thailand's contiguous neighbors were excluded: Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. (not that I would expect them to score well, but the comparison would be interesting)

"Globally, Germany won first place as the world's best country (congrats!) followed by Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Sweden, and Australia."

Google says there are 196 countries in the world today.

the USA is number four on the list. there is only a (21-4=17) 17 country difference between the USA and Thailand AND Sweden and Australia are two of those countries?

So 196-21= 175 countries that are "WORSE than Thailand?

Man the world really is going down the tubes.

You know, know when you fly into Thailand on your private jet, and Miss Thailand does long time with you at the Four Seasons, (because the PM told her to) you tend to get a slanted view of reality.

Made my day to read that bit of useless information.

Interestingly they scored very low on citizenship

why "interestingly"? you cannot get a Thai passport here through marriage as you can in Europe/US etc. the whole thing is xenophobic

A ridiculous survey ! Germany the best ? Laughable ! Very soon in Germany they will not be able to step out of their houses at night for fear of being attacked by gangs of thugs :) Thailand has been, and still is, the safest country I have ever lived in, and probably the best country overall for having a great holiday at a reasonable price :)

Overly generous I suggest

They only checked 60 countries... so you can say 39 Countries are worse than Thailand. But when I look the list... hmmmm BS

They have the best looking females in the world bar none, after that it's all down hill.

All polls are BS.

Might of got higher if they had a democracy. Oops sorry forgot you don't like that.

LMAO, in your haste to get an anti-Junta comment in, you completely failed to understand what the story was about.

Nice one clap2.gifclap2.gif
