Greetings,

i was wondering if anybody knows if it is possible to rent P.O. boxes and bank safety deposit boxes in Samui. planning a longer stay with times on and off the island and depend on somewhat reliable mail collection. In addition, what is the latest on opening a bank account on a tourist visa, any particular recommendations on bank/branch to try first?

appreciate your help in advance.

P.O. Boxe is normally no problem at the Post Office, but availability may vary from village to village. Maenam Post Office use to charge 500 baht annually.

I have never seen Bank Safety Boxes for customers at Samui – did check for it some years back as I wished to rent one – but there may be boxes available somewhere I never checked. Some bungalow renters have a deposit safe by owner – hotels and resorts normally have a small safe in the room (might be one of those easy to open) – you can buy your own safe in various sizes in for example HomePro; or the little one hotels use in Makro for 990 baht.

To my knowledge you may need to "shop around", as some banks do not accept opening an account on Tourist Visa and Passport only, other does. Think that Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank (K-Bank) are good options to begin your "shopping tour". Perhaps some other member has more up-to-date information...?

Hello, me again,  did anybody have any recent experience renting a PO Box from the post office or a private company in Samui?

One of my neighbours uses a box at Maenam Post office with no problems.... if there is a parcel or large envelop they just leave a slip in the box and item is picked up inside the PO. It may depend on if any still available ...

Can't say I have heard of a private service.

Personally I find the postal delivery service just fine. ... just make sure house number is visible for the delivery guy...

I have a P.O.Box at Maenam Post Office, had it for more than 10 years. Works excellent – and as SamuiJimmi said, if there's a parcel or registered letter, you will get an info-slip in the box; there's a counter next to the boxes to collect parcels and registered mail – the fee is 500 baht a year, prepaid.

You can try the Tanachart Bank for safety deposit boxes. I have one there since more than 7 years.
Good luck
Cheers, Carlos
