Wheelchair accessible tuk-tuk debuts

The maker of a new tuk-tuk prototype retrofitted with a wheelchair ramp hopes to usher in a new era of wheelchair-friendly travel in Phnom Penh. Ian Jones, a consultant for the Agile Development Group, is the mastermind behind the new handicap-friendly tuk-tuk, which features a simple metal ramp that acts as backdoor to the tuk-tuk as well as a strap inside the carriage that secures the wheelchair.

The tuk-tuk can fit three passengers, including the wheelchaired passenger, he said. Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is blind in one eye, has made the rights of disabled and handicapped people a pet issue.

Anything that helps the disabled be more mobile in Asia is to be welcomed .Currently most walkways and roads are no go areas to unfortunate people with restricted mobility

Good to see responsible governments / countries are becoming aware of disabled access facilities, unfortunately not Thailand.

Great initiative. When I first travelled to Cambodia, almost 20 years ago, the number of people, mostly begging, with one, or no, legs, a legacy of the Khmer Rouge mines, was a real eye opener.

Khmers are amongst the nicest, if not the nicest, people I've encountered, despite their terrible past.

I worked there in 2003, still a wild place then.
