Crossing into Savannahket.

Featured Replies

I have asked this question before, and was told that Thai immigration will not let the bike cross into Savannahket.

I have since been told different. Anyone cross the border into Savannahket before?

Is it only a case of getting the green book translated?

I once crossed the bridge from Savannakhet back into Thailand ( Mukdahan) without any problems, but indeed I've red and heard it's not alllowed the other way around ( not sure if it's true but I've red a story about a group of Thai bikers which did not bother to stop at the Laos side when going back to LOS and this incident caused not allowing big bikes entering at Mukdahan/into Laos) Maybe things now are back to normal.

You could try to arrange a pick up truck to get your bike across, I've red somewhere that's allowed but can't comfirm.

Entering Laos at the bridge at Nong Khai a couple of weeks back went smoothly.

For all I know; no need to have the green book translated, was never asked.

Good luck and if you succeed please let us know here.

no pedistrians or bikes are allowed across the bridge

no pedistrians or bikes are allowed across the bridge

Maybe I was the exception which proves the rule, But I did rode my motorcycle across the bridge ( Back to Thailand) at Savannakhet/Mukdahan.( May 2014)

It's not exiting Laos that way, the problem is entering Laos at Savannakhet

Riding back into Thailand is fine .. It's going out.

Get your green book translation done at the DLT office, 25B or something, can take upto 24 hours, some places within the hour.

Yeah, everyone will tell you - no need but, you're supposed to have it. I make a photocopy pack of all my documents, and let Lao customs take whatever they want and they always take it.

FWIW .. I go to Malaysia quite frequently and it's required there. So I get mine done with my porabor and road tax as it lasts for a year. You ask for 'Blair tabian' they always ask a question for confirmation like 'ahh, going to Malay right ?' .. It's the same translation wether you go to Laos or wherever.

Thanks, that's interesting. But Thai government crackdowns usually only last a short time.

Maybe if I go to my local Immigration office, surely they can find out and tell me if I can now ride out in to Savannakhet.

It's not the Thai immigration - it's the Laos government - it's plenty documented about the incidents and reason why the bridges are closed.

That's why I mention the translation, Laos can be a bit up and down with requirements from time to time. Always take multiple copies of documents as reports from time to time they want more than one copy of your passport.
