A No. 147 bus rests against an electrical pole Tuesday night in western Bangkok after its driver said he intentionally drove into it to arrest the vehicle’s momentum.

BANGKOK — A young boy was injured Tuesday night on a passenger bus after its driver said the brakes failed, forcing him to deliberately crash it into a utility pole.

The pink No. 147 bus had just left The Mall Tha Phra when it drove into an electrical pole at the entrance of Soi Phetkasem 18/1 in western Bangkok. Bus driver Tontrakan Chanma, 35, said he decided to crash the bus because he saw a checkpoint ahead and could not slow the vehicle.

ever hear of down shifting?

its the second thing you do after using the emergency brake.

the drivers should be using a combination of down shifting and braking every time they need to slow down.

i know, that is two things to do at once, but you will get the hang of it.

lets hope the kid is OK.

and get these stupid police check points of the roads. they cause more accidents and traffic jams.

............changing down with an automatic gearbox, please explain.

Just like a manual except no clutch to disengage. You move the selector through the gate to the next lowest gear and use engine braking. Most modern cars in Thailand have this feature but whether the pink bus has a sequential selector I know not.

The bus driver is a hero.

Driving into a electricity pole???

A post accident inspection of the vehicle and driver is needed...

  • Had the brakes failed?
  • Failure due poor maintenance?
  • Standard of maintenance?
  • Driver DUI?
  • Driver eyesight and medially fit?

Brakes don't suddenly stop working. That happens if a hose breaks but they should be checked regularly.

Good that the crappy bus is off the road now, it's really time for new ones. Also the busdrivers are too lazy to drive professional.
