Sometimes when you get to the stream of the page you show you're not in England. Click hola smile and there then click one more time to fix. Sometimes, it takes more times until It find some ip. and then put F5 reload on the bbc site stream... after it will work. but I was watching on my laptop just fine at the poor internet connection in Pattaya...thumbsup.gif

we strongly advise that the 46 million users of Hola uninstall the service to prevent their connection from being hijacked

We lost our BBC in Chiang Mai some months ago. I understand it ceased to be a free channel and was put up for bids and True or somebody now has the exclusive rights to it. It was replaced by Sky News.

That was a result then.

Sky news is great for breaking news,

So is it the BBC who have removed the service from these cable channels or is it Thailand that has blocked it?

I'm not that bothered as I can easily access it through other sources, and frankly, I prefer the BBC News Channel which is similar to BBC world news but carries more domestic news. I can also timeshift.

BBC is often very disappointing in its news coverage and if a major story breaks, we only get coverage of a single story. This happens over and over again. I don't know if it's laziness or just shoddy management. I accept that major stories should have the most time devoted to them but that doesn't mean they should totally exclude all the other news that's happening around the world. And often a news story goes on day after day, even when there are no updates. A good example is the disappearance of MH370 which the BBC covered almost to the exclusion of all other stories for weeks on end.

World news means world news - not just pick one or two stories and exclude all the others.

There is also a similar trend on BBC UK news. I read the other day that ex-newsreader Jan Leaming never watches BBC news anymore because it was full of 'mini-documentaries' rather than covering all the news around the country. In her day, she said they covered ten times more news items on a typical bulletin. I agree.

That's my take anyway.

RIP BBC World news, maybe it is time...

Good post. I suspect you have the Expats TV, which can deliver all the news channels. The best, by far in my view for UK news, is Channel 4 at 7pm UK, which I watch on catch up.

As for the BBC, the World Service has slowly gone down the tubes over the years. It's had major budget cuts and tends,as you say, to cover 'mildly interesting' news stories ad infinitum. If you are watching during the morning, or early afternoon in Thailand, then the BBC service is running on a skeleton night staff basis. SKY can also be like that, particularly if they have an 'exclusive' report from a correspondent. I suppose if you pay someone to go to, say, the Central African Republic and they then file a story on corruption, it needs to be shown to justify the costs, but I would not consider that to be a world news lead. But then, I don't live in the CAR.

The death of David Bowie was, in my humble opinion, covered to a ridiculous level, with the TV showing dozens of 'tweets' from all sorts of people. This didn't happen on radio.

In my humble view, radio is still the best for news. The BBC Radio 4 today programme, starting at 1pm in Thailand is something I listen to every day if possible.

The difference of course is that TV consider a story to be 'major' if they have dramatic or exclusive footage, whereas radio uses a better and more sensible criteria.

Agree with everything you have said including the OTT coverage of Bowie's death, but by now I expect nothing less of a news channel that seems to be run by idiots.

I mentioned Jan Leaming in my original post and she too said that radio news was much better - which it is.

I just read a critique of BBC UK TV news by some professor who stated that every news item was extended by having another journalist in the studio to discuss the news in depth which added little or nothing to the news itself, but just used up time. I mean it's crazy - journalists interviewing journalists - almost as bad as tweets from someone in Yemen commenting on a mass shooting in America. Who cares what he thinks? It's not news.

Second to radio news is newspapers online - Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and even the BBC news website which is much more comprehensive than their TV coverage. Unfortunately, it has also spawned a lot of rubbish and distorted news from rags like the Daily Mail and much worse.

Did you know the Daily Mail (USA) is the most successful online newspaper in America? I can only sigh....

Ok, BBC is still off the air and not on any other channel. What is the current situation. Is it correct that True now have it and that it will be off on Sophon cable permanently, or is it just a mix up with the engineers?

BBC World News has always been on True, along with CNN and CNBC. I'd prefer Sky News and, for entertainment value, Fox News.

BBC world was also off air on KTV in Khon Kaen as of Thursday morning

BBC was back on KTV Khon Kaen at lunchtime on Thursday but I notice that it seems to be 'delayed' now. I always thought that the headline news was on the hour, business news on the half hour and sport at quarter to the hour. The headlines, with the countdown clock, are now starting anywhere between 6-9 minutes past the hour, subsequent programs have also 'moved' by this amount.

Hopefully Fox News is still there!

"News" Brah-ha-ha-ha-ha....!

Currently Fox News is the news! Run by right-wing nutters, but essential viewing.

Actually, I do find myself watching it more often than I should ... great entertainment value (one cannot live on non-fiction alone), but I would never admit it to my friends

Why dont you just watch BBC online on your laptop ? Who needs cable TV these days as long as you have a stable internet line. Just finished watching the breakfast show on BBC 1 . And tonight it's FA Cup action with Derby - Man U , and its completely free to watch.

In Phuket BBC World news also off air but they replaced now with Filmon BBC News the UK version its coming from online from this site:

http://www.filmon.tv/tv/channel/export?channel_id=27&affid=50442Nm

Slightly different quality, screen smaller in the cable tv, the frame rate bad too and it sometimes stops lol, but on the given link its pretty good quality, looks like its banned in the whole country since yesterday.

Other then that i found it very biased coverage in general.

Still not on in Pattaya, Soaphan Cable. Just a verticle rainbow. Why don't one of you thousands of guys who have taken in a bargirl/massage lady get her to go down there and find out what the hell is going on? She's got to earn all that lovin you are giving her and it would be a great help to all of us less fortunate people. Thanks.

Regarding MH 370, it was CNN International which covered the story 24/7 for weeks, not the BBC. BTW, they still don't know what happened to the flight. May they all RIP including those two traveling on fake passports.

What is banned? BBC News on several cable operators or the aforementioned link?

Can't find out, not in Thailand these days.

If that's the link, plus BBC News still being absent from many places, or back with a convenient delay to being up a black screen in case something comes up that the junta doesn't like, I'd say that Auntie definitely is under the microscope from the big guys in the LOS.

What for exactly? no idea.
