I'll ask again:

Did the OP run the Windows Update Troubleshooter?

read my posts since the OP, I had a mixture of issues primariily my mouse deciding to develope a fault just after the update, my system is now completely updated and working 100%

There are however reports of others having update issues which have generally been resolved or answered by myself and by other posters

Apologies, I just realised DigitalBanana was not the OP and I'd addressed my initial question to him.

Waiting for him to update us.

Go to an internet cafe, download GWX Control Panel from Ultimate Outsider (http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/), download and install on your system. RTFM (read the manual!!!)

That's your last resort.

Your first resort should have been backing up you system regularly, and creating a disk image of you system drive (usually your C drive if windows) on a monthly basis and creating restore points prior to letting Windows hose your system.

Invest in Norton Ghost 15 (costs money) or try PING (Partimage is Not Ghost) which does disk/partition images and restores. Or look for another disk/partition image open source free program to image your system. If Win 10 hoses your system, you can always restores back using a disk/partition image. The Windows Update service is your friend, and yet with Windows 10 being forced down you throat, it now isn't your friend. Can't live with it, can't live without it. If you install GWX Control Panel, the software will do it's best to stop the Microsoft Machine from Hell from infecting your computer with an unwanted and undesired upgrade. Then start learning how to become your own system administrator on your own computer. Ignorance of your operating system will screw you. MS is not your friend. Start considering Apple (if you are not computer savvy, or Linux if you're willing to learn. Microsoft has become the IBM of the present era. Read up on IBM to find why they lost their market share in the pre-PC era.

I've heard of golf tragics and cricket tragics. Sounds like there are Windows tragics as well. Seriously, why do you guys keep shelling out hard cash for a product which seems to give the majority of users major headaches, when you can get free Linux-based OS for the asking?

A comparison:

Laptop with Ubuntu installed. Bootup time 35 seconds, system updates take about a minute, get them about every two months. Have not had a virus in five years.

Laptop with Windows Vista ( vomit ) upgraded RAM, installed Windows 7. Bootup time 3 minutes 10 seconds. System updates and patches anything up to 30 minutes, get them more than once a week. Three virus infections in 4 years. One was so virulent the only cure was to buy a new hard drive.

I t baffles me how apparently intelligent people persist with a product that has been complete s##t for more than a decade. It reminds of the quote from Santayana,

"Those who do not learn from the lessons of history are condemned to repeat it".

35 seconds.. wow id shoot myself if my win10 was so slow. My desktop with windows 10 starts in under 10 seconds. I guess if I had a crap computer i might use Ubuntu too.

Latest update on mine ( yesterday) resulted in Google Chrome being destroyed. Tried removal and re-install, but it just refuses to run.

Interesting. I had the same issue. I uninstalled Chrome, ran CCleaner, and then did a search for any thing related to Chrome (watch it, many non-Google Chrome reg entries have a 'Chrome label', searched and deleted all Chrome references in the file system, rebooted, researched for Chrome related tags, and then reinstalled the newest download that I verified using https://www.virustotal.com.

Back up and in business. Not sure what that was about.

open CMD as administrator then run: sfc /scannow

It will find and correct and issues you may have. Alternatively run chkdsk /f and see if it solves your problems

sfc /scannow? That's a 'hail mary' pass. You shouldn't have to go there.

It works until it doesn't. I do not trust Microsoft, especially now. I'll use a third party program.

To update my Windows system can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

To update my Ubuntu based systems takes 5 minutes.

There is no comparison. MS is a piece of ....nevermind. If you want your Microsoft product, you can keep your Microsoft product. Just like you could keep your doctor and your insurance plan with ObummerCare.

anyone else have a seriously disfunctional computer right now, well I suppose if you have you won't be able to reply to this topic

basically mouse and keyboard not responding correctly, I got it working messing arround with Task manager........need a clear head to look at this, system restore did not fix it so they have done something that is throwing a big spanner in the works

I posted elsewhere, yes win10 seriously F'd up my very stable system. Worked very well for a couple weeks then started dying. Formatted and back to win7 64bit and once again enjoying a stable system.

if that was meant for me I have already performed both tasks, but like I said, my system is stable for now, and sfc is run in an admin powershell not cmd

To gain access you go via CMD and that has to be in administration mode or it will when you put the command in reject it

Latest update on mine ( yesterday) resulted in Google Chrome being destroyed. Tried removal and re-install, but it just refuses to run.

Since recent updates Chrome is slow to start up and sometimes freezes the first couple of times but then it works on the second or third try. Only seems to be a problem the first time I try to use it after waking the computer from sleep mode. Some other things like Thunderbird and Excel seem to take forever to open the first time after waking the computer or restarting. Once they start the first time, Chrome and the others start up with less delay.

After a previous update the Windows search was extremely slow and the search function in a folder didn't work at all. Following a subsequent update those things seemed to have returned to their "normal" functionality.

What is 1511? A KB number? A date? How would I (can I) manually download the update to bring me to build 10586?

Think of it as a Service Pack, a major Upgrade. It was released in mid Nov 15. It's large in size...like around 3GB...it almost like reinstalling Windows but it keeps all your apps/settings. Below weblink describes the upgrade well I think even though it was talking to the Windows Insider Preview community.

http://www.askvg.com/windows-10-november-update-threshold-2-available-for-download/

You can either do it either by using the MS Media Creation Tool or grabbing the ISO from MS TechBench. Using the Media Creation Took is probably the easiest for the average user. See below weblinks for info on how to do it...not hard at all. I did it myself in late Nov when I thought I was not going to get the Nov upgrade for some reason, but later MS announced it just being released in stage to users...might take a month or so for everyone to get it. Anyway I downloaded the latest ISO for TechBench and did it that way vs using the MCT...went without a hitch. As always, make a image backup before attempt below to be safe.

http://www.windowscentral.com/use-media-creation-tool-update-windows10

http://www.groovypost.com/howto/install-windows-10-november-update-1511-manually-media-creation-tool/

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench (Be sure to pick the right version to match your current version)

Thanks! I never heard of the November update referred to as "Windows 10 version 1511" but apparently it was by some folks.

I've given up hope on MS pushing the update to me. After all, it's going on three months now. So, I did the MS Media Creation Tool routine and from beginning to end was about an hour.

As for the updating taking so long.. it does that automatically at night when i switch the computer off.. no loss of time.

Glad it worked out. Yea, the November upgrade accumulated a lot of different aliases and part of that was Microsoft's fault in how they referred to it in blogs/media releases/etc. But now MS seems to refer to it just as -1511. However if you go to your Command Prompt window and other places in Windows where it automatically shows your Windows version number it will say Ver 10.0.10586 vs the original 29 Jul 15 release of Ver 10.0.10240...so, that's why you still see it referred to as Ver 10586 by many and in different areas of Windows.

And now after each cumulative update you will see a .XX number added after the 10586 part for the "complete" build number. Like right now the latest version/build number if you have all the updates installed is 10.0.10586.71. Here's a snapshot of what my 'puter says when clicking the Windows icon, selecting Settings, System, About.

post-55970-0-86648500-1454380919_thumb.j

Notice the .XX number after the 10586. As mentioned that will change as cumulative updates are installed. You should be at 10586.71 if all the updates have installed.

Below is a history of the updates that affected the .XX build number.

post-55970-0-81597800-1454381046_thumb.j

And when you see people talking versions like Build 14251 these people have signed up/are running the latest Win 10 Insider Preview versions...think of them as beta releases which may or may not be released to the general public in the future under that build number. The thousands of people running these Insider Preview releases and providing feedback to MS makes the general public much more stable/bug free...my thanks to such folks.

Appreciate the help thanks. Win10 seemed to be hanging on the KB3124262 update for me followed by a bunch of Office 2016 updates pending.

I tried Windows Update Troubleshooter (as you suggested) without success - and it gave the answer:

Windows 10 update error "Service Registration is missing or corrupt" - not fixed.

I then tried Control Panel - Security troubleshoot common computer problems - System Security- Fix problems with windows update as admin >

Result "troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."

Then I just decided to reboot anyway and without explanation from Windows the updates went ahead smoothly.

Not sure what is the problem with KB3124262 update that caused my machine to stuck on 7% progress for past 4 days or so, system performance was not impacted as far as I could notice, but now it has installed. To be honest if I had not read this thread I would not have checked Windows updates anyway and it may have just sorted itself out eventually.

At least with they way Win 10 updates are handled via a "cumulative" update approach, if a certain update just refuses to install on your machine, then the next cumulative update in a week or two may fix the problem. Like talked about at below weblink. But hey, waiting a week or two for the next cumulative update which may or may not fix the issue is not a week or two I would like living through.

Actually W10 is free for the majority of people.

Linux has its place alright, I use it for things that it's good at.

But it simply doesn't have the hardware support or breadth of applications that Windows has.

Or the ease of use that OSX has if you are into that kind of thing.

I have build computers for a living.. installed plenty of them. I guess i know what I am doing.. now I can understand why the less fortunate in life would want a linux computer. The hardware requirements are not as high and you might even look smart saying you use linux.

For other people who make decent money and use their computer for business they just put in a SSD and some ram and it all works. 10 seconds is all that it takes for me to start my computer up. I havent had a virus in... ever.. why because I am not stupid.

Now tell me that good hardware and an SSD does not make a difference.

no, i won't tell you, because you are right. ssd is fast and cool - with any op system.

but, i am running linux mint on a brand new toshiba that came with w10 - and she flies, now that i got rid of this cumbersome dinosaur.

the reason why your comp boots up in no time is because w10 never really shuts down.(fast boot option)

tell me - and be honest - how long does it take you to access your comp's BIOS. you that have to go through a series of options to switch of 'fast boot' - and after that she will take a long time... no?

i am not trying to convince you, if you love ms win, all good.

i have spent at least a year of my lifetime since 1990 looking at blue screens, feeding floppies, re - booting... all this stopped with linux.

it is a tool. like a shifter spanner, like a socket set, like a bicycle pump. it works, it is good, it helps me, it runs my computer, i do not have to worry.

All these suggested fixes for Windows 10 problems. I want a computer that runs virtually trouble-free, not be continually searching for ways to fix bugs. I still have Windows 7 installed and never had a problem with it from the get-go.

have to agree but there are ways you can cover yourself if you know what you are doing, W7 was superb no other word for it, W10 is challenging at times but it really isn't that bad

I got caught in an unusual situation today where an update occured right when my mouse decided the right button was not going to work anymore - a wired mouse worked ok but that doesn't mean that the software supporting the wireless mouse wasn't somehow corrupted (it happened before), logitec can be tempermental the best of times, lucky enough I have another system (alienware lappy with W10) that I eventually booted up and tried it there, it is 6 months behind the update state of the desktop, lucky enough the mouse failed to work properly on the laptop also without any updates - so faulty mouse

I gave an identicle mouse to a friend when I gave him a spare lappy I had and got that back off him to try and it is working fine

this has been a rather complicated day for me or else I'm getting old lol

Quote : " W7 was superb no other word for it, W10 is challenging at times but it really isn't that bad". I'm a luddite where computer programs are concerned but i am a very experienced user. I stay away from so-called 'upgrades' as far as possible. I have Windows 7 running problem-free, and as it is/was 'superb', why would anyone feel compelled to switch to the unpredictable 10 ? Why not follow the old adage 'If it aint broke don't fix it' ?
