Dumb Customs Declaration Question

Featured Replies

really dumb question

the daughter will be arriving with video camera (borrowed from friends) and her well equipped non digital camera, and mp3 and cell phone plus something like 30 films (no joke she uses about ten in a week).

does she have to declare this stuff on the flight declaration forms?? or is this typical tourist stuff that no one bothers to declare?

i never travel with anything really so never thought of this before.

AFAIK there are no longer customs forms to fill in on the flight :o

Personally, I wouldn't dream of declaring what is normal tourist kit.

BTW Do NOT put FILM in checked baggage, it stands a high chance of being fogged by the x-ray kit.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

:o Couldn't she just buy the film in Thailand and then get it developed here? One less headache or worry

Technically, you are limited to one camera with 5 rolls of film or one video camera with three films. See this link. But that regulation was made back before the introduction of digital cameras and I doubt they really care much about that anymore. But given the recent crackdown on passengers bringing in excess cigarettes or liquor, I don't think I'd chance it myself. Is she travelling alone? If not, have her give some of her film to accompanying passengers while passing through customs.

I hope you didn't think that last comment out thouroughly. :o

If you would accept something from another person to "carry through customs" for them you could be in for some trouble in the future. I can't imagine she will find many people to help her out getting something through customs. If there is a question I would just declare the items and hope to get them through. I haven't been through since the coup but on the occasions when I tried to declare items (over a kilo of tobbaco among other things) I was just waved through when they saw what it was. In the current climate I wouldn't try to sneak anything through.

I think you misread my comment..."Is she travelling alone? If not...", meaning if she's travelling with family/friends, distribute legal quantities of film amongst them. I certainly didn't mean to ask total strangers to carry it for her.

Sorry, I thought of that after I posted. The first thing that came to mind was asking strangers and all the smugglers claiming they didn't know they were carrying drugs. :o

Fully, agree to this, most tourists carry this. The films a bit much but don't think anybody cares.

BTW, developping should be cheaper in Thailand.

As a avid photagrapher..She probably develops her own prints and the developing quallity in thailand is not that high
