PHUKET: A large number of Thalang residents on Thursday (Feb 4) voted in favour of two flyover being built on Thepkassattri Rd despite previous objections to the projects.

More than 400 people showed up at a meeting held on Thursday to discuss plans to construct the two flyovers. Officials in attendance included Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat, Highway Department’s Samak Lerdwonghad, project engineers, and local government officials.

V/Gov Chokdee insisted on votes being cast after some residents continued to disapprove of the projects stating the flyovers would encroach their community and they wanted officials to find other solution to solve traffic problems on Thepkassattri Rd.

V/Gov Chokdee said, “Out of 339 residents in attendance, 259 people voted in favour of the projects, only 80 people voted against.

Obvious common sense ... flyovers are built quicker and cheaper.

It's the officials that want underpasses as it's more expemsive = more back handers.

And just look at that Samkong underpass fiasco ...

And yet this plan is for flyovers!

Democracy in action ?

Some insist that there is no "democracy" in Thailand but a handful of villagers have the power of veto on major infrastructure improvements/projects ?

It would seem grassroots Democracy is alive and well !

Flyover is out of the question at the monument, but in other places would be an advantage.

A flyover at the first traffic light before the heroines monument would help a lot.

An underpass at the heroines monument would be OK I guess but surely will not happen.

Is it possible to import the Thalang residents to Chalong, so they can vote down the underpass at a possible public hearing?

They seem to be more open minded.

Thepkassattri Road definitely needs some flyovers because it is getting clogged up at rush hour times.

Tunnels on that road? No place.

You could say the same about Chalong but that hasn't stopped them.

Kickbacks take precedence over logic.

I cannot believe they are doing a tunnel at the bypass road and 4020 junction. One simple little flyover from the 4020 south bound onto the west bound by pass was all that was needed, might have put in a u turn even to really keep the flow going, and could have been done in a few weeks for what- 1/ 000 the cost of a tunnel? Not even any homes there, it's all commercialized completely.

Yes it must be about kickbacks, this country is completely un-salvageable.

Just seen the Gazette's article and it seems the flyovers are going to be just for u-turns but with a 100m budget for each of them, it's a huge difference to the underpass budgets.
