V/Gov to strip 10 per cent zones of unruly vendors

PHUKET: Beaches with vendors that continually break beach management rules will be stripped of their 10 per cent zones and designated as virgin beaches, confirmed Phuket Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat.

The vice governor's comments come fast on the heels of photographic evidence sent to the Phuket Gazette of beach chairs chained to trees at Kata Beach last week.

“We will do whatever is necessary to make sure beach rules are obeyed,” said Vice Governor Chokdee. “If necessary, I will set beaches back to ground zero, as Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada has vowed that he wants Phuket’s beaches to be clean and clear.”

Heard it all before, many times. All talk no action..again and again.

Why would people object to sunbeds and deck chairs?

Why would people object to sunbeds and deck chairs?

Phuket beaches were parking lots for thousands and thousands of sunbeds. These were vendors that were doing business on the King's beaches. Public beaches were owned by the venders. When the General took over, one of the first things he did was throw them all off, along with all the other encroaching businesses like the clubs and disco built on the sand. Throwing everyone off the beach was the best thing that ever happened to Phuket. One huge layer of corruption was removed by getting rid all that. The beaches are also beautiful again. They've never looked better.

So there are rules about what is allowed on the beaches.

The problem is there is no enforcement of those rules so the venders ignore the rules and expand their encroaching businesses every day. No enforcement of the rules means there are no rules.

At Laem Sing Beach for instance, one day the beach was covered in illegal sunchairs again. The governor had them cleared in a couple of days but the encroachment of venders continues to expand because no one stops them. Restaurants have popped up on Kamala Beach. Everywhere vendors are constantly pushing to expand on to the beach. Surin Beach is entirely covered in mats for what should be only 10% of the beach.

All it would take was a squad of military enforcers to tour each beach once a week. Fine offenders and take their illegal chairs and mats. Encroachment would immediately stop.

Doesn't sound like that difficult a thing does it?

The governor talks but things rarely happen. Business as usual with the Governor doing as little as possible.

I suppose the vendors could argue that they are covering only 10% of the actual sand. rolleyes.gif

Or, we could do what the "the islands leading authorities" suggested in June 2014, and reported here:

and here:

...which is to send these pictures to the following:

- email: [email protected]

- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/phuket.anticorruption

- Mail, with no postage stamp needed: 1111 Government House, Bangkok, 10302

- In person: 1111 Service Centre at Gate 4, Government House

- web site: http://www.1111.go.th/

or call:

- Hotline 1111: Available 24 hours with 100 call receivers

- Major General Praveen Pongsirin 081 8936083 - reporting of beach encroachers.

Thanks Jetset

Facebook page doesn't work.

I don't know how effective sending them pictures are. They don't care. If they would occasionally inspect these violations are easy to spot.
