Report Acting Thai PM Urges Unity Amid Border Clashes and US Tariffs
Acting Thai PM Phumtham Wechayachai. Picture courtesy of THai Rath Thai Government Calls for Solidarity Amidst Border Clashes and Trade Setbacks Thailandโs acting prime minister has pledged to guide the nation through its latest twin trials, ongoing border clashes with Cambodia and a hefty tariff from the United States, whilst urging unity among citizens with assurances of support, peace, and collective resolve. In a nationally broadcast address today, Deputy Prime Minister and Acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai acknowledged the nationโs dual struggles: escalating military tensions on the Thai-Cambodian frontier and an abrupt economic setback due to US trade tariffs. โThailand has weathered two significant tests to our nation's stabilityโendangering both our security and economic welfare,โ Phumtham declared. Recent border clashes have subsided, and both nations have agreed to participate in discussions mediated by the General Border Committee (GBC). The Thai government expressed its "deepest condolences" to the families of the victims, promising compensation of 10 million baht for each fallen soldier and 8 million baht for each civilian casualty. Additional funds will address property damage and income disruptions. To prevent further unrest, authorities have established a new investigative body dedicated to monitoring online content and combating disinformation threats that could jeopardise national stability. Simultaneously, Thailand is grappling with the United Statesโ imposition of a 19% tariff on Thai exportsโan economic shock that, according to Government House, was anticipated but still presents a severe challenge. Economists speculate that this tariff could adversely impact key sectors, such as electronics and agriculture, potentially affecting thousands of jobs and significantly reducing export revenues. The government is reportedly exploring alternatives to mitigate the financial damage, including seeking new trade partners and enhancing domestic consumption strategies. Phumtham reassured the public that Thailand would explore diplomatic avenues with the United States and increase efforts to strengthen existing trade relationships within Southeast Asia. โWe are committed to finding a way forward for Thailandโs economy amidst these challenges,โ Phumtham assured. In the face of these external pressures, the government is urging citizens to unite in national solidarity. Citizens are encouraged to maintain faith in Thailandโs resilience, keeping calm and informed through official channels without succumbing to misinformation or panic. As the nation navigates these troubled waters, all eyes are on the government's next moves in handling diplomatic and economic relations, not only with its neighbours but also on the global stage, underscoring the critical role of strategic international alliances for Thailandโs future security and prosperity. Crime Swedish Drug Trafficking Fugitive Arrested in Bang Lamung
Pictures courtesy of Daily News. A Swedish man wanted by INTERPOL for his involvement in a major drug trafficking network has been arrested in Chonburi, where he had been living in hiding in an upmarket villa. The 37-year-old suspect, known by the alias โToby,โ was apprehended by officers from Immigration Division 3 following an extensive undercover operation. Police confirmed he was the subject of a Red Notice issued by INTERPOL at the request of Swedish authorities, who seek his extradition on serious drug-related charges. According to Pol. Maj. Gen. Chairit Anurak, Commander of Immigration Division 3, the operation was part of an intensified crackdown on transnational criminals living illegally in Thailand. The arrest took place on 4 August at around 16:30, following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering. Officers from the Eastern Investigation Unit, led by Pol. Col. Jirapong Rujiradamrongchai and Pol. Lt. Col. Ithithorn Prasertsak, had traced the fugitive to an exclusive residential estate in Bang Lamung. Toby is accused of serving as a global moderator for a darknet drug marketplace called โArchetypโ, a platform facilitating the illegal sale of narcotics through encrypted private chat rooms. The platform primarily catered to clients in Scandinavia but extended its reach across Europe. Swedish authorities have labelled him a major figure in a sophisticated international trafficking network. โThis individual poses a significant threat to public safety and is considered a high-value target by European law enforcement,โ said Pol. Maj. Gen. Chairit. โHis online activities played a central role in coordinating drug sales across borders.โ The arrest comes under the direction of Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanumas Boonyalak, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau and was part of a broader government-mandated initiative to root out foreign fugitives and safeguard national security. The Commissioner stressed that such operations are essential not only for domestic safety but also to protect Thailandโs international reputation as a country that upholds the rule of law. Toby is now being held in custody while extradition proceedings are initiated in cooperation with Swedish authorities. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-08-06 -

Economy Thai Airways Plots Comeback with 150-Jet Fleet by 2033
Been parked there for ages along with various other aircraft. The A340s took forever and a day to shift, not sure if they have all gone yet. Many airlines returned their A380s to service post-C19. Far better aircraft to fly in long distance than the crappy 777-300 which can't fly high enough and is noisy. Singapore Airlines making good use of theirs. 4 engine jet economics aren't as favourable but they have other positives so not sure why they don't work for TG, plus they are hardly renowned for tight cost control in any case ๐ TG could have looked at selling to others like Emirates, who are still heavy users and lobbied for an A380neo. Perhaps they have been parked so long they are only good for parts now, so waiting for that write-down. Probably should have gone to the desert rather than sitting in the BKK pollution for years on end. -
