Skiing in Japan

Featured Replies

I have heard that a cheap skiing holiday is possible from Thailand to Japan.

It would be wonderful to feel skis on the snow again.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of holiday?

Can anyone make any recommendations for a good resort and accommodation at a reasonable price?

Can anyone make recommendations for travel there?

There have been previous threads about this. The consensus was that skiing in Japan was very expensive and that Korea was a much more economical alternative.

Hell, you can even go to the big ski resort the North Koreans just opened...probably very safe as you would have a dozen police following you down the trails.

Not that I am really knowledgable about the topic, but Japan??

One of the most expensive places on earth for tourists!

Indeed for Korea (Seoul) there are fairly cheap flights from Bangkok.

I recently saw a FIS downhill race from ? in South Korea.

The track was OK but not too much snow on the other hills.

If you are an experienced skier/boarder Korea would disappoint.

I've been to 3 or 4 resorts there, and its very average:

man made snow, very icy, and the slopes are jam packed

Lift pass prices are similar, its the accommodation cost that is the killer in Japan.

South Korea gets an average of <3 metres snowfall a year, compared to Japans 15 metres, which is touted as some of the best powder going.

If accommodation costs are the killer...how about other daily costs, food, transport etc...what are they like....wondering if a house swap was organised, then no accommodation costs etc

Food and drink isn't bad, more than Thailand, less than the west.

In the resort area there are good transport links, busses and trains etc

As an example I just booked a bus for next week from sapporo airport to Hirafu (resort town where im staying), 2 hour journey: 1100thb - so a lot more than thailand, but not ridiculous...

Once there, there are shuttle busses put on by the resorts to take you to the lifts.

So it would all depend on where you're based.

Unless you know the house swap owners, I doubt you'd get a deal - a 2 bed apartment (sleeps 5) is costing us 92000 baht for a week...

There are hostels/dorm rooms available though so it can be done cheaper.

Friends just swapped a house here for there for 3 weeks....so can be done.....thanks for the info
