Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) supporters in the US defended Prime Minister Hun Sen after hundreds of protesters turned out for his visit to Rancho Mirage, California for the US-ASEAN summit, echoing claims aired last week that the protest was tacitly supported by the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

Chaetra Yi, a Cambodian-American living in Massachusetts, said the US visit was a watershed moment for Cambodia and Mr. Hun Sen. According to Mr. Yi, the fact that he was invited by US President Barack Obama should make all Cambodians across the world proud, and will help raise awareness about Cambodia in other countries.

“It is about Cambodian pride,” he said. Mr. Chaetra slammed the protest against Mr. Hun Sen, saying, “The CAA was just established, and its leaders and members are the activists of the CNRP.”
