Blooming Poon Trees

Featured Replies

Our local <deleted> Poon Tree is in flower again. You can smell this tree from miles away... I kinda like it now... In case anyone else is in the jungle, and they catch a strange smell on the air... of perfumed ####

Sterculia foetida is a soft wooded tree that can grow up to 115 feet tall. It was described in 1753 by Carolus Linnaeus. Common names for the plant are the bastard poon tree, java olive tree, hazel sterculia, and wild almond tree. The origin of the name of the bad-smelling Sterculia genus comes from the Roman god, Sterquilinus, who was the god of fertilizer or manure.

I like the B astard Poon Tree... (MODS that is it's real name) old tropical forest tree... rare, and if you take a walk say in Op Khan, you'll catch the smell at this time of the year... but it could be miles away... It's fun to be able to identify it. For me it's a calendar of sorts.

Pretty much every house in our village - Near Baan Tawai has trees canopies covering their entire yards - mostly lumyai trees propped up with large stakes... Can't say Thais hate trees really.
Might hate grass though - still undecided - dirt seems to be the standard.

I do wonder if the huge dead trees on the CM - Lampoon road have been sabotaged though - blocking advertising space and all that

The other seasonal smell in Chiang Mai that permeates the air is from those flowering Yucca plants - that's at the start of the cold season.
Now it's B'tard Poon Tree time for a few months.
