KRABI: -- Nopparatthara national park officials will on Wednesday begin a crackdown on illegal cliff diving in Krabi province.

The park chief, Mr Sarayut Tansathien, said cliff diving activity which is popular among young foreign tourists is not safe enough because tourism operators who arrange for such adventurous trips are mostly not experienced and they are not capable of looking after several tourists at a time.

The most popular spots for cliff diving are at Poda island in Tambon Ao Nang, Muang district.

Mr Sarayut said many tourism operators do not have license to arrange cliff diving trips and they are not quite concerned with safety issue. He said that the divers may plunge into a tourist boats in the sea or fall other tourists swimming or snorkeling in the areas.

Cliff diving will be completely banned unless tourism operators have the licenses, he stated.
