Patpong go-go girls go strictly ballroom

BANGKOK: -- Go-go girls at Bangkok's notorious Patpong "entertainment" district will soon be receiving lessons in classical dance in an effort to prevent pole-swinging sprains and other gyration-related injuries, media reports said on Tuesday. Empower Foundation, a women's rights group, has arranged courses in ballroom and jazz dance steps, starting November 3, for Patpong go-go girls, with 30 ladies already signed up, reported the Bangkok Post newspaper.

According to Empower director Chantawipa Apisuk, instruction in proper dance steps will minimize the risks of sprains and other gyration-induced injuries that are a common complaint among the 5,000 go-go girls who keep Patpong's 80 nightclubs hopping.

Patpong, Bangkok's oldest red-light strip catering to foreigners, took off in the late 1970s when one innovative bar owner had the bright idea of getting his female employees to dance on the bar tops in scanty outfits. The rest is history.

Empower Foundation was set up more than a decade ago to help protect Patpong employees from the threat of HIV/AIDS and other job hazards.

Bringing fine art to pole dancing

Patpong girls polish moves for safety's sake

Hooking legs onto poles and swinging around in sensual go-go movements requires knowledge of the basic steps of classical dance _ to do it safely.

Girls in Patpong are going to learn how to fuse pole-dancing with elegant dance styles, never normally found in exotic bars, for the sake of art and their health.

"Why not upgrade go-go dancing and make it a profession?" said Empower Foundation director Chantawipa Apisuk, or Noi, during the A-Go-Go Dancing Contest 2006

i'm sure thailand has more pressing matters to attend to,

but then again maybe not

if these people have done an in depth study to show ballroom dancing will protect these delicate little flowers :o who are we to laugh at such an idea :D

after all said the uk govmt advertised a job in the times last year for nappy technicians for 35k per year, that was to show new mothers how to change nappies correctly :D

they should put all these highly progressive people in a room for a month or two and see what obscure ideas can be thought. :D

can't wait to get back over and see ballroom a go go

in an effort to prevent pole-swinging sprains and other gyration-related injuries,

Well I have been known to venture down to that district of town every now and again, and I would venture to guess that those ladies are not sustaining any injuries doing the Bangkok shuffle on stage - and rarely have I incountered anything that I would classify as pole-swining. IMHO the majority of stage injuries are related to the ladies wearing high heels that they are not accustomed to prior to and outside their work in the bars.

Patpong go-go girls go strictly ballroom

will minimize the risks of sprains and other gyration-induced injuries

Additionally I would fathom a guess that quite a few of the gyration-induced injuries occur outside the bar in a more horizontally related position.

Never been to Pat Pong , and it's not on my list while here in BKK

but I have seen go-go dancers in other countries.

Their athleticism alway sacared me off even suggesting any

extra-curricular one-on-one activities.

Yes I can believe that they might pop something doing what they

do. I would.

As for the the cynicism expressed "haven't these people got

anything better to do" well I admire an organisation which is

trying to to something for these girls. How else are they to

get out of "the trade" or should they remain "untouchables"

to coin a phrase.

:o

I think that getting the birds to shag the costomers could also have had something to do with its popularity :o

Yes, well now, I have also ventured into a strip club every now and again in the west. And let me tell you that the athleticism that you refer to is rarely on display in Thailand. Hence the famous Bangkok shuffle – the ladies standing around with one or both hands merely holding the pole, while the intermittently shuffle their feet. Bangkok may be famous for the go-go scene, but that has little to do with the actual dancing ability.

This is not to say there is not a lady or two out their plying their wares that does indeed know how to “shake-that-money-maker”, but those women seem to be few and far between.

I applaud this group for whatever work they may be doing in regard to STD education, but the resources they are using for these dance lessons could certainly be used in more effective ways to really help these ladies.

Have these NGO people nothing better to do? :o How about bringing reps from Gillette over, to show them how to do a "razor show" safely? :D

I'm glad you noticed it as well my friend. Must be pretty tame up there nowadays for them to come up with this. They would have been better buying them some game-boys or comic books so they had some way to kill the boredom that most of em appear to suffer from.

I've had it out on here with NGO's before. They come here because its a safe place to do good, they are tedious, pretentious and ineffective. All the wierdo kiddy porners are dobbed in by locals and expats who detest them, not as a result of these NGO's. I suggest they post rice planting and farming jobs at the end of all red light districts offering 5,000 baht per month and see how many takers there are.

They really should be in Cambodia and Burma if they want a cause, but its too dangerous for them there and they would have to give up the comfortable life they have here.
