PHUKET: The project that will see unsightly power cables along Patong’s beachfront moved underground is awaiting finalization of the bidding process.

The 230-million-baht project will be jointly funded by the Phuket Provincial Electric Authority (PEA) and the Patong Municipality (story here).

“Contractors have submitted their bids to the PEA headquarters in Bangkok and one will be chosen by March,” confirmed Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup.

lets hope a nation wide trend and required for all future development.

Hope it's not the same company that buried the cable that electrocuted a kid last week.

Karon beachfront buried their cables a year or so ago. What a difference ..

How about a pic of this historic event !

lets hope a nation wide trend and required for all future development.

Well, let's also hope the standard of workmanship and safety is also miraculously improved so we do not begin to have dozens of people electrocuted to death every year... Something about Thailand and beach and water and underground power cables just leaves me less than interested.

So when they are digging up the road, where will the tuktuks and rental vehicles park?

By the time all of the graft and kickbacks and shortcuts are complete, there won't be much left to do it right.

Hope that the cheapest bid isnt accepted, 3 cm deep is not quite enough!

Nothing to do with the cheapest bidder......all to do with commissions!

The cables will need to be re_rated for bigger size as they will run hotter buried underground!but will this happen???

Yet another topic destroyed by cynical Thai bashing comment.

The critics do not get out much or they would have noticed the successful under-grounding of cables in Phuket town and I believe in Karon.

It was supposed to be done after the tsunami. No idea why it did not eventuate.

And even 10cm is not enough when it is under the sand of the beach where umbrella operators hammer brollies into the sand. But it might be an electri-frying way to lower the number of beach umbrella touts.
