BANGKOK, 27 February 2016 (NNT) – Deputy Premier and Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan officially visited Belarus between February 26 and 27, 2016 to strengthen security cooperation between the two countries.

His visit was paid at the invitation of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

The Belarusian president said he was ready to discuss all promising areas of interaction between Thailand and Belarus. “We can establish robust cooperation and reach a high level of bilateral trade,” he added.

Lukashenko emphasized that the Belarusians will “do its best to meet the demands of Thailand in all fields.” That includes a wide range of issues ranging from military and civil personnel training programs to mutual supplies of goods.

Given the Belarus governments' far from stellar record in the field of human rights, the idea of them running military and civil personnel training programs is a tad disturbing.

The junta is racking up an impressive record in strengthening ties with regimes that are globally regarded as undemocratic. But fear not, it's all for the best according to the junta supporters!

A deal is already done.

"First Deputy Chairman of the State Defense Industries Committee Igor Bykov and Head of the Logistics Directorate of the Armed Forces of Thailand Navapoj Damrongpong signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in military technology on 26 February"

While Belarus is Russia's key ally and is a member of a Moscow-led economic union, it has resisted allowing Russian any military bases in the country. Russia does have a radar station in Belarus.

In practice Belarus is politically neutral between Russia and Europe/NATO. Since Russia's annexation of Crimea, Belarus has increased its export of military hardware to the Ukraine. And President Lukashenko has signaled to the EU that he is interested in improving relations with the EU.

With the Thai junta polishing Putin's boots, their interaction with Belarus might not be viewed too happily by Russia. Especially when it comes to Russian military exports.

Belarus is still operating in the 1950's. The Thai minister will report back just how advanced they are and what the military can look forward to in another 20 or so years!
