Immigration and police dont seem to be following what was said about Passports , This is one main reason i left Thailand it is becoming very clear they have adopted a western approach i have only searched in Bangkok but 5 times in one week has turned me off the country , great bloody holiday

Are you saying that you were stopped and searched 5 times in one week ?

I have been going to Bangkok frequently for 15 years now and I have never been stopped and searched.

Maybe he walked around naked? Happens every now and then, as other reports confirm. :-)

What Western approach are you talking about? I have never been searched back home in the States except for by airport security. If you are referring to the Police asking for proper identification then again I would have to say that doesn't happen much at all back home.

Regardless of if he jumped or was assisted, its a sad needless loss of life.

Its hard to imagine how someone could feel suicidal just because he was about to be discovered as an overstay, there must have been other issues in this mans life that led to the decision to end it all. Very sad indeed.

Been living in Bangkok for close to 30 years, I have not been asked for my passport even once other than during night club raids, same goes for my friends who we use to go drinking and clubbing back in the day. Although back in the day, night club raids were very common to check for drugs, its uncommon nowadays. My group of friends are pretty diverse, americans / europeans / russions / indians / thais etc

I would say police have a good eye at picking on whoever looks and acts suspicious. That is not to say there are innocent folks who gets checked on the streets.

I've had to show my passport to the Russian police during my holiday there once while walking on the streets. Didn't think too much about it and was just a quick check.

RIGHT!.................. I've been living in Bangkok for 163 years now, living in shoe box in middle of road, every morning I 'ave to wake up and lick road clean wid tongue! and when our dad gets 'ome, he slices us in two with bread knife! ...............and I've never been asked for my passport! :)

Wish we had proper immigration controls in the UK..passport checks, overstay? into a s--hole detention centre and ejected from the country.

Maybe the Korean was going to lose face for overstay, had problems back home, who knows, drastic solution for the poor chap.

If you lot bothered to read links as posted .....................there had recently been an arrest warrant issued for him in Sth Korea.

So he was on overstay, with an expired passport, no way to re-new the passport due to the arrest warrant,

AND, if arrested in Thailand and deported he would be arrested on his return to Sth Korea.

He must have felt that he had few options left.

Been here for 4 years. I go out almost every night. Often bar areas if friends are here on hole day. NEVER been asked for my passport. Actually was once ....travelling from airport to hua hin after midnight when martial law rules were in. Big deal

Maybe if 'Shirtless' actually wore some shirts he wouldn't get stopped, one less person to worry about. In twenty years never been stopped in the street and asked for passport, if you look like an idiot then you are sure to alert the men in brown.

I can read basic Thai but online print does my eyes in.

So now when you know you're overstaying and about to be blacklisted for years, this becomes an option.

investigators have found out that authorities in South Korea had issued an arrest warrant against Mr Chuk which made it unable for him to return to his home country. (link of kandi post 28)

5 times in a week?? Implausible at best. I first visited in 1980, and probably 50 times since, between a few days and two weeks each time, driven cars and motorcycles, travelled north to south, east to west, and I have NEVER been asked for a PP or licence!

What's the real reason for leaving?

This is a sad story...

Regarding the BiB asking for the Passport. It does happen - there have been numerous threads about this.

An announcement last year by the RTP Commander (?) in Bangkok said that Foreigners don't have to carry their passports.

The regulations call for the Passport to be presented in a reasonable timeframe if requested.

It seems to me that the BiB were allowing the Korean to comply with the regulation of providing his passport within a reasonable timeframe by escorting him to his apartment to present his passport.

That said - why would the bother specifically with the Korean Gentleman and escort him to his Condo just to check his passport ? There may be more to this story. The BiB either became highly suspicious or someone had perhaps made a complaint.

EDIT: More to it - according to the additional links posted. The Korean guy had outstanding arrest warrants in Korea. Its possible that he was in the process of being apprehended by the Thai BiB after a tip-off.

Yeah Yeah..Blame Thai Cops again...You guys really want Thailand to turn into Europe Ghetto of Migrants and refugees..Don't you?

No Thanks. If Thai Cops started following Falang logic...It will end up like Europe biggrin.png

Its called Deterrent ...The low lifes know they can't roam around free and do what they please ..When Cops check their status in the country.

I'm the good guy here and I play by the rules...I will wear my passport in my neck if this would make sure bottom feeders can't hide in Thailand like they do in Europe with laughable laws.

Most Farangs have a twisted logic of what really FREEDOM means, which made Europe what it is today.

Passport checking should be done more often. Good guys like us have nothing to fear, this will make sure, the trouble makers are kept out.

There is no invasion of your privacy here...That's bad farang logic...

It just can't be possible that Thailand evokes such a desire in so many people to end their lives.

No but Thailand likely attracts more than its share of unstable/unhappy people hoping for the cure to their woes.... unfortunately, life doesn't work that way, and it's usually not possible to run away from unhappiness.

I find it kind of ironic that this happened today of all days.

Today is the day according to something I read earlier when the new law about visa overstays and long bans for overstayers comes into affect. Then again there's a post on the immigration website saying it doesn't come into affect until March 20th.

Good guys in, bad guys out certainly applied to this guy.

Don't have a problem wit the police checking my legality to be in the country, I don't like though taking my passport around with me. I work in many countries and my passport has my visa for the country I work in. If the passport is lost or stolen then I don't have a job. Give me time to produce it and no problem I will

Perhaps the South Korean was once a North Korean. Expired South Korean passport might not have been authentic or belonged to the deceased.

And Thailand has a history of returning North Koreans to North Korea.

Better Dead than Red?

The improbable possibilities are almost endless, aren't they.

To me it's pretty clear what happened. This lost soul was clearly deep disturbed, who the he'll commits suicide over a passport check?

An educated guess would be he was acting very suspicious maybe lurking on a roof top or preparing to throw himself under a bus but generally appearing very agitated. This caught the eye of an alert officer and a passport check would be a completely logical step

Some Posters here seem to think the suicide happened as a result of passport check
