Thailand Targets Upgrade After US Trafficking Report
Ron Corben

BANGKOK — The United States and European Union are keeping up pressure on Thailand to continue with reforms in its fishing industry to resolve issues such as slave labor and the exploitation of seafood plant workers. The measures by the Thai Government are seen by analysts as key steps in a bid to boost Thailand’s rating in the U.S.’s annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report due later this year.

The world’s third largest seafood exporter, has faced intense pressure to reform work practices in the multimillion-dollar seafood export industry, which is threatened by sanctions in markets such as the European Union and United States.

The measures have had some effect and a European Union delegation recently granted Thailand a six month reprieve from sanctions to further solve the problems of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The EU have no backbone ... it's quite obvious with anyone with an ounce of integrity would acknowledge Thailand is trying to cover up their mess. Sanctions should have been put in place long ago, and still the EU shamefully are dragging their feet.

Correct.....I would imagine also, that major EU traders of Thai seafood products, are very worried about sanctions.....it would be very difficult for them to source new markets for the volumes they require.

Yeah man, keep on boosting your ratings, you might lose face.

What a sick attitude.

Just say: everybody and we mean everybody involving him(her)self in human trafficking will be prosecuted and will face grave consequences like the death penalty or worse life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.

NOTHING to do with ratings or face.

Agree. The withdrawal of advertising from the talking head on C3 appears to have had an impact so the mealy mouthed EU should take a leaf out of their books and BAN. NOW. Enough already.
