Three Charged with Using Explosives to Fish

Three fishermen were charged by the Koh Kong provincial court yesterday afternoon for using hand-made grenades to catch fish off the small island of Koh Slam, officials said. Lam Sary, deputy chief of the Provincial Administration and Fishery Department, said that Him Hoeun, a 35-year-old fisherman and boat owner, was arrested on Sunday along with his two employees, Sok Lay, 38, and Leng Phoeun, 28.

All three were charged with violating Article 98 of the Law on Fisheries. If found guilty, they face from three to five years in prison. “They were arrested after using hand-made grenades to bomb and catch fish near Koh Slam,” Mr. Sary told Khmer Times by telephone yesterday.
