Cabinet passes public referendum bill

BANGKOK, 16 March 2016 (NNT) – The Cabinet has approved the draft public referendum act, which is set to be imposed during the upcoming vote on the new charter, while three officials of the Ministry of Culture have been named inspectors-general.

According to Mr Distat Hotrakitya, Secretary-General of the Office of the Council of State, the public referendum bill proposed by the Election Commission has received the green light from the Cabinet. No discussions were reportedly made regarding punishment clauses in the draft law.

For the moment, the bill will be forwarded to the National Legislative Assembly while it remains unclear whether any alterations will be made prior to the Assembly’s consideration.

Meanwhile, Culture Minister Weera Rojpotchanarat revealed that the Cabinet also endorsed three high-ranking officials as new inspectors-general of the ministry. The three consist of Deputy Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs Suthep Kasemponmanee, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Cultural Promotion Manat Tharatjai and Deputy Director-General of the Fine Arts Department Pirapon Pisnupong.
