This was installed on my W7 system following a windows update, without my knowledge or permission.

From what I can see, it is a Windows product and seems benign. Although I did get a message that it conflicts with CC cleaner.

Is it of any benefit? Or shall I delete it?

Thanks, guys.

Mobi

I hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, below is a link that may help you to understand the app.

I found the information very helpful and as a result I am currently installing the app on one of my other machines to ''test drive it'' so to speak

However as KhunBENQ states below it is not a Microsoft app,and yes when downloading apps one needs to be aware of the sneaky slip in apps some of these downloads offer.

It does seem as you say a benign app and yes some anti virus trojan apps may well flag it as malicious, check it all out ,all you need to do is search and make your own mind up,

As an extra it may be worthwhile you downloading and installing ''sandboxie'' ,a great quarantine programme that solves problems before they get into your system

It is definitely NOT a product distributed by Microsoft with a Windows Update.

I guess you got it as a "hidden goodie" with some other freeware/software installation.

A common practice nowadays when doing "Standard Installation".

Bundling some other "freebie" that usually bothers you with ads or is a time limited version etc.

Often there are discretely placed check-boxes that select such add-on products.

If your PC lived well without it, uninstall it.

If your PC does not have plenty of RAM memory installed (more than 4 GB?) it can be plain contra productive.

Interesting, I had exactly the same experience as Mobi, it appeared on a W7 box during an update.

The machine had not been run for some time and UKTV updated at the same time so it could have come in with that I suppose.

UPDATE It seems to have come with UK-TV as it just objected to CCleaner on my W10 machine when starting UK-TV. Why would I need a RAMdisk on a dual SSD machine I wonder.

UPDATE 2 definitely UK-TV, uninstalled RAM Disk, UK-TV promptly put it back. With 32G of RAM it's not doing any harm.

Indeed, it's only created a 100MB scratch disk so it's doing no harm, but I doubt it's doing any performance good either.

I use my Laptop almost 24/7 and it did appear at the same time as a windows update, (which drove me crazy as it took soooo long to shut down and then boot again). I seem to recall that I had a bit of a problem with UK TV at the same time, so it probably updated without my knowledge, and gave me this ram product.

I did look at that website, shunter, before I posted the topic, but thanks anyway. That's why I thought it seemed benign, but you can never be sure and I am always ready to suck a few more eggs.

I've got 4GB of RAM so maybe I'll leave it.

Sounds like just a coincidental update of a piece of software/freeware triggered by another program (maybe another Software Perfect product) that just happened to occur about the same time as Windows 7 was doing an update. I did a Win 7 update on one of may computers two days ago (it downloaded 17 important & optional updates...I hadn't updated for about three weeks as this computer don't get turned on that often) and Software Perfect RAM disk was not part of them. Wouldn't expect it to be since it's not a Microsoft update/product. And since two days ago the computer has checked for updates twice (once per day) and no more updates or Software Perfect was downloaded. Yeap, expect triggered due to it already being on your machine or another program (like another Software Perfect product or some other installed program in bed with Software Perfect) allowing the program/update to come through. Every once in a while that happens to me when I don't read the install/update agreement close enough for some initial install of some piece of software or its update and they want to install some other stuff unless I un-check some blocks/say no to the extra stuff....some software can be downright sneaky in trying to slip in other stuff. Preaching to the choir I know.

I'll bet that UKTV installed the softperfect RAM disk as a buffer so that your TV stream doesn't stutter. I've used the softperfect network scanner for years and find it to be a good (and clean) program. Btw, 4 GB of memory is a minimal amount. 8 GB will serve you better if you multitask and most of us (unwittingly) do these days.

Indeed, the earlier version of UK-TV was using the HDD / SSD as a scratch area for the (up to 15 minute) buffer.

Never had a serious buffering issue but plenty of drive activity, so it's probably extending the life of my disk by a small amount.

Yes, I guess it was UK TV.

I very rarely watch anything live due to time differences so I record just about everything I want to watch. Even the odd live programme rarely buffers, but what I have been noticing for the past few months is that the picture is often quite jerky. This never used to happen.

I think it may be better now - I need to check over a longer period to be sure. Could the Ram have something to do with this?

I multi-task a lot, but I was wrong - I have 8GB of Ram not 4GB - so hopefully I am OK.
