NCPO continues to suppress mafia groups

BANGKOK, 22 March 2016 (NNT) – The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) is maintaining its focus on the crackdown against influential groups while reminding state officials not to get involved in illegal practices.

According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Col Sirichan Ngathong, the NCPO acknowledged during its latest meeting the continuous progress in social reorganization and the enforcement of laws against wrongdoers. Operations to eradicate mafia activities, gambling and trade of illegal weapons are being intensified while related authorities have been ordered to give priorities to these matters as they directly threaten the livelihood of the people.

As for the mafia problem, the NCPO instructed security units in each area to monitor influential figures in their locality to make sure they do not cause trouble to residents. The officials have also been told to steer clear of nepotism and bribery and to take good care of the general public.

Mr. Really Big can be re-classified into 3 categories. The Really "Uniform" Big, the Really "wealthy" Big and the Really 'dispensable" Big. The former you keep you waiting forever while the middle group is remotely unlikely as they are income source and the later can be sacrificial for a nice headline.

If questioned about anything being done regarding the mafia in the military I would expect the PM to puff out his cheeks with cotton wool and mumble " It's a family affair. "

I wish TV wouldn't keep wasting space on this forum with the continual BS the current military government spouts about dealing with influential/mafia figures in LOS.

Prayut's utterings on the subject started September 2014 just after the Koh-Tao murders when he vowed to tackle influential rackets and illegitimate businesses on the tourist island. Then we had his 'serious face' follow up late October 2015 (http://englishnews.t...mafiacrackdown) and now this latest crackdown. It's all getting so tediously boring, just like the crackdowns on road safety/deaths. In the words of that once famous tennis player John McInroe I ask Mr Prayut "Are you being serious"?

By cracking down do they mean everyone in the "money food chain"? If that's the case nothing will happen ever ... well nothing the foreseeable future anyway. There are just too many people lining their pockets from the gophers up to the big wigs. Corruption is so embedded into the Thai way of life that it will take years (long after my lifetime) to even start to make a dent in it and no amount of sacrificial lambs will convince anyone that there is a real appetite for it.

Wasn't there to be a review of that and family not deemed qualified for a post would have to give the job up ?

Just like the park scandal. The small fry were thrown to the wolves, the medium fry fled the country, the big boys didn't even flinch.

It's alright though because it's not Thaksin brand corruption you see.
