Haven't used the new airport yet, but when in BKK I almost always stay at the Conrad Bangkok on Wireless Road. I believe it is a stone's throw from the US Embassy. It's a bit pricey, but easily one of the nicer hotels I've ever stayed in (it helps to get free upgrades to a suite).
