Police inspect a No. 8 bus Friday night after it collided with a motorcycle taxi at the entrance of Soi Lat Phrao 54/1 opposite Chokchai Police Station

BANGKOK — A 60-year-old woman died Friday evening when the motorbike taxi she was riding collided with a city bus notorious for its danger.

Police last night charged Tim Aumvithi, 57, the motorbike taxi driver and Manu Pilaiphan, 55, the driver of bus No.8 for reckless driving after their vehicles collided on Lat Phrao Road just opposite the Chokchai Police Station, killing motorbike passenger, 60-year-old Inthira Srivimol.

“They were charged at 11pm,” said police Lt. Aekkarit Roopsa-ard. “The details cannot be confirmed yet since we are still investigating.”

I take that bus sometimes,

O

Drivers in orange Aircon buses are ok, every other bus seems to have maniacs behind the wheel.

A couple of facts about these "maniacs" that might be of interest to you. My brother-in-law was driving these buses until a few weeks ago. He finally quit because it was COSTING HIM money to work. The bus company has only the equivalent of 3rd-party insurance on the buses, and so the drivers have to sign a disclaimer in advance of driving stating that any accident is their fault and that they must pay for all damages to both the bus and the other vehicle involved.

And if they have an accident which was caused by another driver/vehicle, rather than the bus company supporting their driver, they make them pay damages and deduct it from their pay until it's paid off. They earn a miserable 9,000 baht a month! Imagine taking home 2-3,000 baht in a month because some tosser in a Porsche or Merc claimed that you scratched his precious car, and you had to make reparations for 12 months! It happens. Frequently.

Very few of the buses are roadworthy (as Just1Voice noted about the tires on this one) and many breakdown, and so they must also face angry passengers all day. They drive close to 12 hour days, 6 days a week, and he says that he'd go out every day wondering if he'd be in jail by the end of it because some idiot in a car or on a bike would, sometimes several times in day, cut the bus off or brake right in front of him; or the bus would simply fail under his feet and he'd lose control.

I'm not saying that all or any of the drivers are angels, and many of them do drive like nutters; but I doubt any of us would do much better with the pressures the BMTA put on them, the crappy vehicles they have to drive, and the lousy pay they take home. My brother-in-law is one of the best drivers I've found here in Thailand and I'd trust him with my life, but I'm sure he lost his cool head more than once too.

I see those buses doing dangerous moves all day. They should let them pay for killing passengers as well.

It's normal to stop on the 2nd lane of the road and let passengers in/out. As motocy driver i always have to keep left so i go around them on the left side....

They also let passengers out in traffic jam, again i pass them on the left side.

They barely use their indicators.

They like speeding, very extreme sometimes.

They like to drive the right side lane while they are slow vehicles.

They spew huge black fumes out of the exhausts so i stay away from the backside.

I know they have to do their job but should drive more safely. It's really time BKK gets new buses but last i heard is we get chinese electric buses, well that won't work i tell ya.

Last week i saw a Camry under the bus at it's side, it was deep under the bus and still wonder how on earth they managed to do that. Right in the middle of the side.

But also motocytaxi's don't care for trafficrules and take high risks all day so i have no idea who's to blame for the accident. Lady's from 60 shouldn't use motocytaxi's at all.

Being a driver of anything in Bangkok is tough. The drivers of buses here are much less agressive than the bus drivers in San Francisco were. They finally got rid of the bad apples after a 75 day strike. Believe it or not, the buses in SFO didn't run for 75 days! I did a lot of walking.

Clearly that is absolute nonsense. If the buses are insured for 3rd party risks why would the drivers have to pay up in the event of a 3rd party claim? Makes no sense.

Damage caused by other vehicles would be covered by those vehicles insurance.

Post a copy of the disclaimer your brother-in-law signed admitting to all future accidents and agreeing to pay for all damage and compensation to affected parties and I'll believe you. But I can guarantee that you won't be able to do so because you, or he, made it up.

Interesting. The "proof of the pudding is in the eating".

'My brother-in-law is one of the best drivers I've found here in Thailand ...' Not much of a recommendation.

you notice all these old buses only have small mirrors, and the motorbike taxis always come blazing up on the inside of a bus, so there is a huge blind spot for the bus driver, they cannot be seen.
