GPS units for a car, in Thailand

Featured Replies

I recently bought a new car and plan to do a lot of touring around Thailand in the next couple of months.

I am looking for a reasonably priced GPS unit for my car that will work in Thailand.

I have found many online in the 1500- 2000 baht range, but it seems they are programed for either Europe or USA.

I spent the entire day looking at available units that will work in Thailand and was surprised that the ones I found all run form 5000 - 15000 bah t!

Am I looking in all the wrong places, or is this the going price in Thailand?

Is there a place to find one cheaper than 5000?

Can the ones I see online be reprogrammed to work in S.E. Asia?

I plan to start touring the first week in April and would appreciate any advice on purchasing one at a reasonable price before then.

Thanks in advance

P.S. I do not speak or read Thai very well, so English must be an option !

Just pick out an app for your smartphone - works just as well....

I brought a GPS here programmed for Thailand....The battery died after about a year....After ordering 3-4 batteries online (all wrong) I sent it out to have a battery fitted = ended up they didn't have one either....Tried one more online order.....When I went to replace the printed circuit board had been peeled free from multi wire connector....

Tossed it and used a phone app - same thing as I had in the stand alone + I can use it for walking also.....

The one I brought across was a Tom Tom....I also left one in the states - which I now know will be dead as a door nail when we go back.....I'll just get the US app on my phone when I go back for a holiday....

The other unit had been plugged in regularly with care to keep the battery topped.....Once it failed the unit was rendered in-op.....

Plenty of garmin shops in thailand. Pick your model and enjoy. Phones are good for backup just using googles maps.

I bought a fairly basic Garmin Nuvi here about 3 years ago with the lifetime maps update. Has proved invaluable and the battery has not yet died........Was the second cheapest in the range at the time around 5 or 6k baht.

The ESRI maps are very good. The most basic model used to be on offer at 3990 baht so I would suggest OP that you do not want to spend much less than 5k anyhow if you want something that will keep on working. Have a look at some of the posts in the GPS forum as they will give you more background to other's experiences.

Whatever you decide on check the screen size is suitable for your eyesight. Most of the Garmin's are multi language but again check before you buy.

I go cross eyed when I hear about the problems that people have with GPS units in Thailand. I finished up using the tiny screen of my iPhone for navigation, drove many kilometres in Thailand with it. I bought a cheapish tablet and now use that, Google maps is great and has the additional advantage of being able to suggest alternative routes when traffic is heavy. I don't have to key in the EXACT address, including the province, to get somewhere. I can look the place up on the internet, by hook or by crook find the place on Google maps and navigate there. Garmin, Tomtom? In the past as far as I'm concerned, a waste of money.

My wife and I drive quite a bit, and get rental cars all over Thailand. We just use Google maps. It's not perfect at all time, but pretty good still.

I used a Garmin back in the states and it was great. However, I don't know about the map quality for Thailand. The problem is that something like a Garmin unit will update once a year. Google maps updates constantly.

Let me cross you some more. Features of all GPS units are different. Lol a garmin GPS is a waste of money huh? World's leading GPS manufacture and you say they are a waste....mmm they didn't get that distinction by being a waste, thats for sure. Those units can do everything you say they cannot and much more. Nothing wrong with any unit a person wants to use. Can your tablet video record driving? Can your tablet video record all the routes? Can you add waypoints, check your speed? Can your tablet warn you of danger due to being too close to an obstruction? Can your tablet blue tooth to your phone with GPS? There are MANY things a true GPS unit can do that your cheapo tablet cannot.

Incorrect Garmin maps update several times a year not once. Google maps do not update constantly, they too update several times a year, sometimes. It all depends on the area.

Answer: yes they can. If you take the trouble to find out how to do it. I used a Tomtom for many years, thought it was great, and they were, now wonder why I bothered with it. My tablet is also a lot cheaper than a decent GPS unit and if it breaks I can log into my information on the next phone I buy. More than half of the world's navigation aids are based on Google maps. Thailand maps are up dated several times a year with Garmin? I don't believe it. I have listened to a few people complaining that they can't send their location by email to potential visitors, having problems with the transliteration of Thai addresses into English and so on.

Your tablet and google maps cannot so the same things a gps unit can, Plain and simple. I never said thailand maps are updated several times a year. Please go back and read my posts correctly and then apply your retorts. Bottom line is that you want to use a tablet and google maps fine up to you but, to say using the worlds leading GPS manufacture unit is "a waste of money" is just silly. For the record a GPS unit and a tablet with google maps loaded are two different things. I guess it would be equally silly for you to answer my 5 questions? [emoji3]

tom tom Thai maps work well

I just did answer your questions. A phone can do all of the things you mentioned. And it wasn't me that said the TH maps are updated several times a year. Why get so upset about things you obviously haven't tried out?

Does it not have a cable that can be plugged into the 12v accessory socket ?

As to the OP. Buy a Tom tom, worth every cent and has the best maps. Both my vehicles have GPS fitted from the factory and yet I still prefer my tom tom when I need to get somewhere Iam not familiar with.

GPS units will fade away like the old people that still use them.

I think you might have a problem with reading and comprehension. Of all the questions I asked you, NONE of them can be performed by a phone. But then again I wouldnt expect you to be honest about your answers. Just another TV warrior putting disinformation out there without regards to the OP.

OP go to a garmin shop and find a higher end garmin unit. Look for the ones with lifetime map updates and get one with a built in dashcam. Both are important for use in Thailand. If you dont like the maps, there are free open source ones on the net you can download and install. Or use a phone or tablet as other people have suggested. Choice is yours.

Google maps requires an internet connection.

Use a smartphone with maps and you dont need an internet connection.

I use Sygic, free to download, updated regularly and the maps are really cheap. Once purchased your set for life.Only need to carry one device and its extremely accurate and reliable. It also uses your phones camera as a dash-cam which is very useful.

Good info in this thread too:http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/697913-thailand-gps-turn-by-turn-apps-for-android/

Thanks for all of the advice.

I think I have decided to go with the Tablet with google maps option, since I already have a good tablet.

To those who mentioned it, I already have a dash cam as well and agree it is important in Thailand, especially for a farang to prove to the police the accident wa not your fault just because you have more money! 555

I must add that TV is amazing!

Even a simple streight forward question like mine is a great excuse for some keyboard warriors to start an arguement...over nothing!

Thanks again for all of your help!

I'm done and pleased with the reslts.

I would recommend the app named HERE. It is free, and works offline. Uses Nokia maps, I think.

Try Maps.me - a free smartphone app, it doesnt need an internet connection and the maps are free and better detail than Google.

My GPS system sits in the seat next to me ,its called a wife , i just feed it regularaly and it never breaks down ,just keeps on and on biggrin.png

"I think you might have a problem with reading and comprehension." Yes I disagree with you which means that I'm stupid, obviously.

Ok let's have an argument.

Can your tablet video record driving? Yes it can be used as a car cam simultaneously to being used to guide your car. The OP already has a car cam so that argument isn't really valid

Can your tablet video record all the routes? Yes it can, and I can get offline maps for most places apart from Bangkok.

Can you add waypoints, check your speed? Yes it can if I want it to.

Can your tablet warn you of danger due to being too close to an obstruction? No it can't and I see little point in that. Unless you mean traffic obstructions, in which case Google will suggest an alternative route automatically.

I can also get street view to pop up on route, not that there is much point in that.

Can your tablet blue tooth to your phone with GPS? No it can't as my tablet is a phone AND a GPS unit, so why should it?

"There are MANY things a true GPS unit can do that your cheapo tablet cannot". Not so many really. I have heard from various people that one thing they dislike about their Garmins is that you have to put in a precise address including the province, and the English transliteration may not agree with the Thai name. Some of the apps that help me do the above are not free but aren't expensive. The only minus I have experienced with using a tablet as a guide is that they have to be constantly charged meaning that as the GPS guidance mode also heats up the phone, they can occasionally turn themselves off. Happens about once a year.

As I stated before I had a Tomtom for many years and it was fine, now that I use Google maps there's certainly no going back for me.

One thing I like about Google maps is that it shows you more than one route based on the live traffic situation. That is really handy in Bangkok to get round the jams as best as possible.

I think some GPS units can do that too, but they need a sim card to do it. To be fair, if I'm going to pay for a sim card I'm going to put it in my phone where it's much more useful.

Google Maps gives live traffic updates, Really ?

Thank to everyone for your input and advise.

I am very pleased with the results!

At the advice of a poster on this thread, I have loaded the ' HERE APP" into both my smartphone and into my tablet.

The tablet is easier to see while driving.

It is a free GPS app that even works offline.

I have been playing with it this afternoon and I agree with the guy who recommended it to me...

It's better than a GPS unit..and as mentioned above, it is free!

Thanks again!

I am done with this thread.

Just use Waze like everyone else.

Edit: Glad that the "Here" app works for you.

Yes - it had the cable....When the battery life span got shorter and shorter it would work with the cable....When then battery went completely tits up the unit would not work....Got another cable to try and still in-op....

My GPS system sits in the seat next to me ,its called a wife , i just feed it regularly and it never breaks down ,just keeps on and on biggrin.png

Ditto....My wife's name starts with S - I call her Global Positioning S_____________ once she starts....

I have a Galaxy S5 phone. I have had a number of GPS maps on it. It will do for an emergency but if you have ever used a Garmin with Thailand lifetime free map updates, I venture to say that you would never want to use your phone again. I also have an OEM in dash GPS and the Garmin has a MUCH better map.

Please dont try to instill any common sense in this thread. Of course a stand-alone GPS is better. These units are made for usage but some of the people cant grasp that and think using a computer or phone is better. And to say that they are better....no way in Hades is that true for a quality GPS unit. But whatever to each his own. No map is perfect and thats all inexperienced people care about hence, using phones and tablets.
