Two Cambodian citizens were deported by Thai authorities on Monday after illegally crossing the border to allegedly cut rosewood in Thailand’s Sisaket province in December last year.

Touch Ra, chief of the Cambodia-Thai border relations office at the Choam Sa-ngam border checkpoint, said 60-year-old Tei Sarey and 33-year-old Morm Bun Thoeun, both from Kampot province, had been detained by Thai authorities on December 19 for having insufficient documents.

While local media reported that the pair had been logging luxury timber when they were caught, Mr. Ra said they would have been detained longer if that were the case.

“They have been detained for three months because they illegally crossed the border. If they were detained because of crossing the border to cut rosewood trees, they would be detained for more than one year,” he said.
