FBI: Man arrested after doing yoga, meditating on airplane
JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER, Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — A Japan-bound airplane returned to Hawaii because of a violent passenger who wanted to do yoga instead of sit in his seat, the FBI said.

The pilot of the March 26 United Airlines flight from Honolulu International Airport to Narita International Airport turned the plane around after hearing that Hyongtae Pae was yelling at crew members and shoving his wife, the FBI said in a criminal complaint.

Pae told the FBI he didn't want to sit in his seat during the meal service, so he went to the back of the plane to do yoga and meditate. He became angry when his wife and flight attendants told him to return to his seat. "Pae pushed his wife because she was trying to make him stop," the complaint said. "He felt that she was siding with the flight crew."

He tried to head-butt and bite Marines who were passengers on the flight and tried to force him back to his seat, Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren Ching said at Pae's detention hearing Wednesday.

According to the complaint, he threatened to kill passengers and was yelling that there is no god.

Pae went into a rage because he felt the flight crew was ordering him around, Ching said.

Ching said Pae shouldn't be released because he's a danger to his wife, himself and others. Pae urinated on himself and was on suicide watch at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center, Ching said.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang ordered that Pae be released on $25,000 bond, but with certain conditions including not leaving the island of Oahu and undergoing a mental health evaluation.

Since the arrest, Pae's wife has been staying at the Waikiki Gateway Hotel, defense attorney Jin Tae "J.T." Kim told the judge, who asked whether Pae had financial resources to continue staying there after his release. Kim said he's working with the consulate to transfer more money to Pae's wife and find alternate, temporary housing.

Chang denied Kim's request to allow Pae to return home to Korea, because that would involve getting on a plane again.

Outside of court, Kim said his client is a 72-year-old retired farmer who traveled from South Korea to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary with a Hawaii vacation. It was the couple's first trip to Hawaii.

Pae only recently took up yoga to help with anxiety, Kim said, adding that he was sleep-deprived during the vacation. Pae told the FBI he hadn't been able to sleep in 11 days.

What is extremely frustrating about this story is that all the other passengers suffered a major inconvenience because of this knobhead. The airline suffered a financial loss too, which the lunatic will be unable to repay.

Why can't the airlines take up as a policy that captains can make the decision to give some valim or xanax to such passengers and if unsuccessful then either restrain or sedate them ?

why did they want to force him to his seat?

takeoff or landing?

air turbulence?

What would have been the problem if he sat peacefully on the floor (not blocking the way of course?

Anyway his reaction justifies what then happened to him

Where on a passenger can you sit on the floor and not block the way?

Might be cheaper to have foldable cages and put unruly passengers in it. :)

they might harm themselves and people with very twisted minds would then sue the airline for not preventing it.

Had a good laugh at this irony...the dumb bunny wants to return to Korea...but his antics will keep him grounded in Hawaii for the foreseeable future...

Can't a nut case do yoga on an airplane anymore?

I'm thinking he may want to run for President of the US...he appears to have some similar characteristics to those running for office...

I think this was very unclear. If he was feeling anxious and sitting/posing in back to relax, why would they stop him? My daughter and I get up to stretch in the back on long flights too, the seats are cramped and who wants to spend hours in one position anyway. No one has ever told us to sit down.

He really shouldn't have argued or bit anyone. Aren't flight attendants trained to deal with nervous people?

Mate,

I love ur idea however even just restraining fools like this can be a challenge for flight crew, yet alone force feeding medication.

How bout a cage with an ejector chute, send him to sharks below.

I am sure the marines would have been more than happy to knock his lights out, yet obviously they were showing 'restraint'

Nonesence !

Every Airline advises passengers to remain seated with seat belts loosely fastened yet you and thousands of others choose to ignore good advice and risk the safety of others by floating around the cabin like farts.

Sit down, buckle up, hold on and shaddap !

The isles are there for access and crews to move about the plane. The galleys are not for the public and emergency exits are for emergencies, boarding and disembarking the alloy tube, that's it.

Have a nice day we hope you enjoy your flight with Neverdie air but really couldn't give a toss if you don't.

As a Virgin Atlantic moto goes, 'We are here to save your ass, not kiss it"

Come on, switch on!

How bout the fool keeps his yoga for at home or the airport, nobody wants to see some old grub nuts hanging out his shorts while he contours himself 3 inches from where they're sitting.

It's no wonder I fly business class, bloody animals in economy.

Flight attendants are trained to deal with nervous people the same way vets are trained to deal with rabid dogs.
