Personally, I don't see what the fuss is about. Thailand isn't the only country that does this but to be honest, I don't know why car manufacturers agree to it anyway. I once went to a similar show in England and I was looking at a particular car make that I've always admired but could never afford and I told the bikini lady that if she couldn't explain certain details of the car to me then go an wiggle some where else Ha!. Perhaps a poster here might enlighten me as to the history of this because I assume there is a good reason. Sometimes parading young ladies in 'evocative' clothing is to take one's gaze off a particular error etc. but I can't see car shows doing it for that reason. Suggestions anyone?

It's simple really. In marketing terms their goal is to get attention, even if the quality of that attention is low or irrelevant. Attention is cheap and requires no thinking or effort whereas engagement is hard work ... you actually have to think about what you are doing. Most marketers in Thailand are lazy and just do what they have always done and/or whatever everyone else does.

I would say the parking lot bash is much closer to real Thainess than what the government is trying to invent.

This is living the dream for many Thais. Loud low quality music, alchohol and a sex charged atmosphere. Basically frat house standards, but embraced by people decades past college age. I am not making a judgement here, they get to choose their sanook.

but I don't think the government is going raise the countries level of sophistication, by imaging that there is a real Thailand just out of grasp, based on some Victorian ideal. You want the country to behave less like children, put some real effort into education and stop making it seem like Thailand has all the answers.

Absolute nonsense. You don't know much about the general population of Thailand if you think that a minuscule proportion of that population that attends a knees-up in a car park represents the whole.

You say that you're not making a judgement but if that comment wasn't a judgement I don't know what would be.

Who says that anyone wants, or even if there is a necessity for, the country to behave less like children" or that Thailand thinks it "has all the answers" (apart from you)? Where did that gibberish come from?

This is relatively tame compared to the annual big bike show in Chiang Mai. A lot more girls, a lot less fabric.

I just don't get this whole "morality" push by the government. The Thai elites seem to believe that their culture is somehow superior to all others, and immune from common desires and temptations. Why is it that they push their version of morality on their people, while at the same time turning away from the myriad real problems that are holding Thailand back?

Maybe they just don't want to end up like a bunch of degenerates, like the rest of the civilised world!

...the previous one given extensive media coverage had a link under her name....

...porno film with apparent real 'action'....

...was anything done about it....

Why should "anything have been done about it"? Done about what, anyway?

Is it your place to decide how someone makes their living and to comment disapprovingly on it suggesting that some punitive action be taken?

-I did not say a minuscule proportion of the population represents the whole. That is your misunderstanding. A statement like that is illogical.

Obviously a minuscule proportion, by definition, would not represent the whole. You were attempting a straw man argument - sorry it didn't work.

What I did say is right there for everyone to see. But while we are on the topic please show the statistics you researched to determine that the people that attend these shows is indeed a minuscule proportion of the population. Given that these types of things pop up at the drop of a hat, indicates to me that a great many people think they are soot yawt.

-What I gave was a description not a judgement. Many people seems to think I got close to the mark. I didn't say it was good or bad, just what it appears to be. You are free to disagree.

-The last sentence should have began with an if. My bad. In that sentence I am only suggesting a path that one day might see efforts put in more meritorious pursuits or at least more original party tricks, that would receive General consent.

By the way what is your opinion of coyote dancing on sound trucks? I would love to know.

All the Gov't stance does, is make the event more popular & newsworthy; media rock up to check & record what's happening.

Was there yesterday (Fri) & each of main exhibitors have a showtime, where the "pretty's" strut their schtuff & out front is a wall of photographers, media, pros & amateurs all wanting to get a great shot!

As said in another comment, if patrons didn't like the "pretty's" they likely would complain to organisers or not go!

This event is least of Gov't's worries & need to focus on main agenda.

If sex sells cars why is the government upset. They would do anything to bump up revenue. Its all about the money honey here and not much else. Chill out and let the prettys have their day. This "blooming" period of their life does not last long so let them flaunt it and enjoy it while they can. Before they know it life evolves into having a job and children and hopefully a husband that stays though thick and thin not only the thin.

He can't give his head a shake, his perm would fall out! He's not so much a Brit as a pretend car thief from Liverpool (translation of his moniker). Don't rile him though just urge him to "calm down" (twice)

I guess the moralists in the present government have never been to an Issan "Morlum Sing", a house blessing, a wedding, a birthday, oh hell anything that is a good excuse to have a good time. Neighbors have had a couple of celebrations complete with some lovely, scantily dressed young ladies. I get a good view as my house is behind the stage and they don't care what I see when I walk past to the front. I've squirmed in my seat a few times with the obvious flirtatious looks from a couple. While the wife wasn't there, the neighbors would really, really love to rat me out, no not the ones throwing the party. Oh, I forgot, the powers in charge don't even like Issan, so no they've probably never been and would consider it below their station. If it's the past they want to restore, they need to learn history. Like those that preach morals in the states, they usually are the worst of the lot. Dance on ladies!

There's a school principal in Don Muang, also happens to be a phu yai baan, owns a few 'karaoke' joints and supplies coyotes (on the lower end of the market), coyotes isn't really the correct term. rolleyes.gif

He recruits the M5 and M6 girls from his school. No one bats an eyelid. A well liked and affable bloke that shows up at small events and pays for everyone's drink etc. with big smiles and laughs and light-hearted greasiness. The locals love him.

Thai culture.

I agree whole heartedly with these comments. I don't think what was said applies only to Thailand. It is sort of a generational thing. I will make no comment on whether the frat house mentality is good or bad but it exists everywhere. While I do think there is a time and place for everything, to the generations that follow mine it seems the sky is the limit. One only has to look at the change right here in the USA in TV shows and movies from the 50's to the shows of today to see that a certain raunchiness is the norm of today. Kardashians, Housewives of "you name it", etc., all are popular shows appealing to the masses baser instincts of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Not any wonder there are societal problems today as there seems to be little restraint on any subject, and I'm no prude.
