First Syrian refugees arrive in Germany under EU-Turkey exchange deal



HANOVER: -- The first group of Syrian refugees to be sent to Europe in exchange for those returned to Turkey arrived in northern Germany on Monday.

The first planeload carrying sixteen Syrians landed in Hanover on a morning flight from Istanbul. A similar number arrived slightly later, around midday.

The new arrivals were taken to a reception centre at Friedland in the surrounding Lower Saxony region.

“They are of course very excited because they had to pack up everything in Turkey in a relatively short period of time. They had one week to do this. And they had to get up very, very early in the morning today. There is a very long journey behind them and now they are of course excited about what to expect here in Germany,” said Corinna Wicher of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

Germany’s Chancellor Merkel largely helped orchestrate the European Union’s exchange deal with Turkey, under which the number of resettlements in Europe is to be capped at 72,000.

Last year more than a million migrants entered Germany. Although many people in the country welcomed the refugees, others have voiced fears about integration, security and costs.

Despite the massive influx of refugees, more than half the places in reception centres are now said to be vacant.

The move by several countries to close the Balkan route has drastically reduced numbers.

Good point, but I wonder how many of those women do see it that way, viz., as victims.

More Muslim unidentifiable ninjas. Coming to the west should include removing the veil, how do you integrate masked marauders hiding under the radar by dress? Don't really know the gender of these two, doubt the "happy" Germans do either.

Naw, don't see these as victims of anything, the only victims could well be the German population. If being a donkey in Syria was so bad why wear a donkey suit to Germany?

They will soon find out that this way of dressing is not really appreciated in Germany.

And how will they deal with that after having been covered from top to toe all their lives.

Nobody dares to make any suggestions to that regard.

There is no question about how they will deal with it. They will demand that everybody else adopt their standards of dress, hygiene (or lack thereof), diet, and social behavior. And if the rest don't, they'll start popping out suicide bombers in a few years.

Absolutely right, that is why there will be an additional problem with integration of the folks who are allowed to stay.

There is enough evidence of that during the last 10 or 20 years. Solution: back to save heaven in the ME.
