Over 5,000 operations canceled as England junior doctors launch strike

LONDON, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of junior doctors in England launched their fourth industrial action on Wednesday over a long-running contract dispute, leaving more than 5,100 operations postponed.

During the 48-hour strike, only emergency care will be provided.

"We deeply regret any disruption this action will cause to patients, but it is because we believe this contract would be bad for the delivery of patient care in the long term that we are taking this action," said Johann Malawana, junior doctor committee chair of BMA, a trade union of British doctors.

This is the second 48-hour strike carried out by BMA junior doctor members, and a third 48-hour strike will be held on April 26 and 27, which will for the first time provide no emergency care.

The NHS as with all socialism will fall apart. Someone forgot to tell those doctors that "everyone is entitled to health care" which is nothing more than a nice sounding slogan until it isn't there any longer.

No wonder we have so many foreign doctors working in the US - so many that I can see a doctor today on a walk-in basis. No appointment needed, 24/7.

Cheers.

The NHS has been performing miraculous, life saving and life changing work for 70 years - the challenges it faces are not to be ignored, but the biggest challenge is the odious dogma of the Nasty Party.

As for the US - you forgot to mention an important restriction: limited to those who can afford to pay. What sort of a backward country limits healthcare only to those who can afford it?

I don't know anyone in the US who can't get health care. Do you?

As more and more people crash into the UK for "benefits" it will crash the system.

Cheers.

I personally don't either, but the Henry J Kaiser Foundation estimates that in 2014 there were 32 million Americans who did not have health insurance, and that 27% of them went without necessary medical treatment due to an inability to pay for it. So there are 8.6 million people who neither you nor I know of, but who didn't get the necessary health care that they required. Personally, I don't need to know them in order to wish to help their situation.

Anyone requiring "necessary treatment" only has to present themselves to a hospital emergency room. It is against the law to turn them away.

The Wikipedia page for the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act doesn't give me the assurance I would want to live worry-free, but I am always happy to learn. Are you telling me that if I turned up at a hospital without insurance and was diagnosed with cancer, the hospital would treat me for the disease as they would a paying patient?

I don't know the specifics for cancer(s). I do know, for example, that if you show up and need dialysis on a regular treatment basis that you will get it, even if you are not a citizen and cannot pay.

The NHS isn't just falling apart, it is being systematically destroyed in a deliberate act of political ideology by a Neoliberal government.

Neoliberalism is an ideology destined to fail, the cracks are already showing as our current government is getting the UK deeper and deeper in debt, despite having sold off more taxpayer owned assets than any previous government.

We haven't had a socialist government for nearly forty years!

You seem not to have noticed what is being said. "Anyone requiring "necessary treatment" only has to present themselves to a hospital emergency room. It is against the law to turn them away.". Are you claiming that anyone requiring treatment gets that treatment. or do you require further links that people who require medical treatment in the USA do not get it as they cannot afford it whereas in the UK with its near collapsing universal health care system appears to be able to provide health care.

During the 48-hour strike, only emergency care will be provided.

Triage to determine who qualifies as being in need of emergency care will be undertaken by the cleaning staff. Those left in the waiting area for hours on end with only vending machine coffee for comfort may not even notice the change.

If you were hamstrung I expect you'd be near collapse. Underfunding and diverting remaining funds to private health providers and banks (Google NHS PFI).

Funny thing was I had to take my mum to hospital for her appointment with her consultant, half expecting appointments to be cancelled or servilely delayed with consultants doing the work of junior doctors, we were early and surprisingly my mum was called nearly 15 minutes early and we were on our way back home 20 minutes later, wish NHS hospitals would run that efficiently every day.
