I need to obtain a Thai Police Clearance Certificate for my Thai wife. She is applying for an US immigrant visa.

She is telling me that the required documentation includes some kind of financial support documents, but when I looked at their 'sample of required documents' list, I didn't see anything similar.

There was a farang written letter called 'invitation to marriage', but we are already married so I believe this would not apply?

Also what is the usual wait for these certificates, and would an 'extra payment' help speed things along?

What is an immigrant visa? You should be able to get a marriage visa. I checked into it many years ago, thinking it would be convenient for my wife to have a USA passport, but then dropped it when I discovered it required my wife to actually stay in the USA for something like 3 months. Neither of us wanted to even visit the USA, let alone spend a lot of time there. But since it sounds like your wife's intention is to live in the USA, the marriage visa might be right for you. It takes quite a while, but you are almost assured of getting it. And there are no sure things with USA immigration.

And at the end of that 3 month period or what ever it is, she would get a green card allowing her to work in the US and I think resident status.

But it was before 9/11 when I checked into it. These days you'll probably have to wait at least 6 months just for the background checks that they do to see if she's a terrorist.

3 years ago my wife needed one for an EEA Family Member 90 day Visa to go to become resident in Spain.

She went to the DSI in BKK where they photographed her and took palm and finger prints and other info from her Tambian Baan (House Book).

No financial info taken.

It took about three weeks for the document to be available but I think there was a possibility of an express service at a little more cost.

Don't know if it's still available, can always ask.

If she also needs a health cert then on the day she visits the DSI, she should pop into the Police Hospital (next door) and they will do the necessary tests and produce the cert using the correct wording.

Well, that's how it was for us and 3 years ago so things may have changed.....

Of course things will not be the same in the USA as for Spain but....

She had a 90 day visa but as soon as she applied (in Spain) to start the process of being registered with a Spanish Foreigners ID, the Visa didn't matter any more.

The important thing was that she (we) needed to jump through all the hoops and complete the registration before leaving the country.

The man in the Spanish Embassy in BKK said that if we had to leave before it was fully completed it would be nearly impossible to start over -

they would be forever suspicious of why we couldn't complete it the first time.

It took us 5 months to do and I am told that we got the job done in record time.....

It felt as if they needed to know that she really did want to spend a long time in the country....

Since all paperwork was done, she comes and goes without further visa's or re-entry permits.

We generally spend a little more than 6 months in Spain to comply with the need to show that she can be classed as "ordinarily resident in Spain"

Sorry I can't give you specific info re your country but I hope our experience helps.

For Spain she needed health insurance and as a Brit I could have got that done for free if I had applied to the Brit Pensions office whilst we were still in Thailand.

Oh well, you live n learn.

Stay calm and the Best of luck.

Only 3 months? The UK requires you to stay at least 3 years which is why my wife and I gave up on it

OK. Thanks for all the replies. My question was poorly worded, with incomplete information.

We have been married for 15 years, legally, in Thailand. We used the marriage certificate to get her US tourist visa a few years ago. At this point I have filed an I-130 (petition for immigrant visa). That has been accepted, so our current step is to submit documents to the US National Visa Center. I know that the I-864 affadavit of support is one of the required docs for her US immigrant visa. The Thai Police Clearance Certificate is another.

My wife called the Thai Police here http://www.pcscenter.sb.police.go.th/eng/ They told her she would need to bring documents, including some sort of financial support docs. There is a list of sample documents on their website, but they are all in Thai except for the one "marriage invitation?" letter in broken English. Sounds like maybe she got some bad info.

The Police clearance document is required well into the IV process. You start with filling the I-30 application with the embassy in Bangkok. Actually, it is with the Homeland Security office in 2nd tower in the office complex across the street from the citizen services entrance. You need to google "steps for immigrant visa" and get a handle on the overall process; it is long, tedious, confusing, and will cost you $740. The financial support document is needed when you submit "packet #3". Plan to spend several hours on the internet learning what is required. Most of what is there assumes that you are in the U.S. and your wife is in Thailand. You have to prove that you are a resident of Thailand (work permit, or retirement visa) in order to interact directly with the embassy here.

It is not easy, and I believe that it was designed to be difficult to weed out people who are not serious. My wife got through the Homeland Security step (I-130 submission) a month ago. We were told it would take 3 months for the case to get over to the IV section at the embassy, then we will submit "Packet 3" by mail and then wait to hear about any further information they need and finally my wife will go to Bangkok for an interview. It helps if you understand that the goal of the process is not to let people into the U.S., but to keep them out.

Good luck to you.

I am actually in the USA at the moment...I live here and applied through USCIS. Now the NVC is ready for me to mail the packet 3 documents. I may have made a tactical error by not having the Police clearance in hand already. I thought if I got it too early the NVC would not accept it.

If you filed in the US, its a longer process. The Police certificate is for your wife, you do not need one. She can bring it and the medical in at the time of the interview. You do not have to wait for it.

If you do file in Thailand, its a lot shorter process. If you have your stuff together you can go from filing to visa in about 3 months. They say 2 or 3 months for the i-130 to be approved, but usually you will hear from them in about a month. Then you will get your packet 3 in about 2 or 3 weeks. If you have it ready to send, You will get packet 4 and appointment date in less than a week. They do the appointments here a month at a time, so if you get the packet 3 docs sent quickly, you may get an appointment in less than 2 weeks. But be careful. As I said, the police certificate can be brought to the interview, but you can't go for it until you have packet 3 because the police have to see the cover page to begin. and its 5 to 6 weeks out. They will let you do the interview at the embassy without it, and you may be granted a visa, but they won't send it to you until you send in the certificate.

For a spouse, its really not that hard. You just have do do it all in order. And as long as you keep sending them things they ask for, you won't be refused.

EXCEPT. Don't have your wife say she did massage and went out with a client------no matter how long ago it was. I think most places in the world would look at it as a date, but they see it as prostitution..

For those applying here it can take up to a month to get one. Not sure about those sent from outside the country.
