Bangkok Metro Magazine, available at Asia books or any good english language book/newpaper vendor has a run down on some of the more decent places.

I'm throwing my 10 cents worth in for Big Johns on Thonglor (Sukhumvit 55) http://www.bigjohnsworld.com - a great place to not only meet locals but as he's got cheap guestrooms there is an endless stream of bright young backpackers to meet and chat with.

The beer is cold and cheap and the pies, burgers and sausages are second to none.

I second Steak One.

Also:

Bourbon Street in Washington Square. Good breakfasts. Passable Mexican buffet on Tuesday nights. Excellent holiday buffets (American Thanksgiving and Christmas).

Tokyo Joe's for blues and jazz. Sometimes there is a special menu. For example, black-eyed peas with cornbread was served a couple of Saturdays ago while the ROL Trio played jazz.

Two shops to the left of Big Johns is "The Local Pub" Nice cold beer, good cocktails and reasonable prices also one pool table. Good spot for Farangs as Thonglor is heavy on Japanese and Witches is noisy.Next to this is Krua Thonglor, Good Isarn Food
