Army chief blasts Watana for comment on Facebook after being freed

BANGKOK: Army commander-in-chief Gen Teerachai Nakwanich yesterday blasted Pheu Thai party's key member Watana Muangsook for his continual criticism of the military junta on his Facebook page soon after being freed from custody at an army camp.

Watana said on Facebook yesterday that he still considered what he viewed and posted on Facebook was an expression of opinions and what he did was not a political movement and was not wrong.

Therefore the military junta has no right to detain him, he said, adding that he then protested by starting a fast and was later freed.

He said he was not surprised to hear Maj Gen Thammanoon Withee, commander of the 9th Infantry Division, reportedly said that if the next morning he did not eat food provided by the division, he would face a charge as such act signalled an act of protest.

Watana also wrote that his daughter has to leave for Hong Kong with tears for not being able to be the first person to see him on his release from detention.

Army chief Gen Teerachai said the politician was trying to divert public attention from his offence, and asked the media not to pay much attention to him.

He said Watana is a person who violated the law and must be dealt with by laws as the prime minister has made clear of legal actions to be taken against all law breakers.

On Tuesday, Mr Watana’s daughter Weerada petitioned the European Union (EU) to push for his release as well as to examine his case and other arbitrary detentions by the military.

She told reporters that international organisation or any external body specialising in human rights should probe whether the junta’s actions violated international law.

Mr Watana said on Facebook he owed his daughter for her sacrifice, adding she was the key to securing his release.

In my humble opinion, I don't believe this Watana has done anything wrong, (from what I have read). But of course I am not making up and implementing new laws and obviously do not "understand" them! Although I would like to suggest (next time we're making up some of these new laws) well.. barking dogs are driving me nuts, can we have the owners put to death on the first complaint...thank you.

that pesky FB thing again.

Shut it down, I say. Oh, wait ... they have already tried that several times.

They know that horse has bolted. There would be too serious ramifications for them if they even attempted that.

Their own high so, selfie loving, food picture taking supporters would even turn on them then.

There will come a time when "social media" will not be appropriate, for a nation in mourning.

It will be closed in a flash.

Its closure may well coincide with an epidemic of sudden blood disorders.

If you look at Wattana's FB page today you can see he has superimposing things on the heads of the military like a child would do to goad someone they don't like.

Non constructive criticism is a specialty of these people. Criticism that doe nothing to further their cause except to keep them in the limelight where they desperately crave to be. Wattana is just following his natural traits.

What next. Drawing horns on photos of the military and blacking a few teeth out!

"Tourists think that Thailand is beautiful, safe and that they can do anything they want here. That they can put on their bikinis and go anywhere they want. I ask, can you get away with wearing bikinis in Thailand? Unless you are not beautiful?" Prayuth said in a televised speech on Wednesday.

Thailand’s junta leader, Prayuth Chan-ocha, has said he will “probably just execute” any journalist who does not “report the truth”.

Some gems from your hero there Jamie.

If he is behaving like a child why are the Military responding to him, if he is goading them why are they taking the bait.

The immaturity of saving face rules on both sides.

Or visiting the Facebook page of some politician he doesn't know simply in order to complain about what they post? Edited by baboon

Non-constructive? I guess that's the exact opposite of you then, given the way you repeatedly use half-truths, ignore inconvenient stuff that conflicts with your arguments and rework history over and over to construct your criticism.

I can see why it may be a problem for you.

People need to realise it is a "military Junta" that's ruling the country, so they are going to be tough in there stance on public comment, freedoms, etc.

There are examples of this in other neighbouring countries.

The likes of Watana, etc, must know this & simply are trying to push the issue to the limits for whatever purpose, rightly or wrongly.

Interesting adjunct, tried to add Watana as friend, just follow what he's saying; msg comes up exceeds friends limit (@ 4830)!!

Army chief Gen Teerachai said the politician was trying to divert public attention from his offence, and asked the media not to pay much attention to him.

let's see, which offence was that, ....

It looks to me like it he violated Article 19, which in turn led to him violating Article 9, which has led to a violation of Article 11, and will very likely mean a violation of Article 10.

All in all, I'd say he's guilty. Hang 'im high.... coffee1.gif

If Watana want to stay few month in jail it's not a problem.....

Yes, just lock up all those who disagree with you. That will solve all your problems and create peace and harmony. But don't you find it curious that these men with guns have such a fear words ?
